JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Maintainer I
Salary Matrix: $54,288.00- $65,998.40
Department: Water Division
Immediate Supervisor: Water Operations Manager, Water Division Foreman
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
To support the operation of the Water Division by inspecting water mains, connections and utility installations for conformance with standards, plans, and specifications; and by performing manual and semi-skilled work in construction, maintenance, and repair of water system lines, pumping stations, facilities, and equipment. Work includes installing, inspecting and repairing meters as well as participating in the reading of water meters for billing purposes.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Inspects, maintains measurements, tests and advises on proper materials and installation procedures on service and water mains. Investigates, notifies, offers solutions and orders repairs for defective water lines.
- Operates a jack-hammer, dump truck, pipe saw, other hand tools, water pumps, and performs other manual work required to access and repair/replace damaged water lines, replace sections, or install new water lines. Must be aware of and comply with all OSHA requirements and recommendations for these activities.
- To assist in the installation of new water service connections and mains to residential and commercial property.
- To complete required training and follow Water Division guidelines for the daily operation and maintenance of the pumping stations, feed and control facility, storage tank including taking and recording readings, maintaining chemical levels and safety reporting.
- Work includes installing, inspecting and repairing meters as well as participating in the reading of water meters for billing purposes. Reads meters and records consumption data on assigned routes.
- To install new water meters, remove and test old meters reporting the results to the Director of Operations and maintaining the Water Divisions’ inventory of meters.
- To maintain and perform basic repairs to the Water Division’s fleet of trucks and construction equipment.
- To locate curb stops and service lines for contractors and read water meters as required during the Water Division’s billing cycle or at other times.
- Will participate in the rotation of On-Call duty on a weekly basis after a 6-month training and probationary period and will be generally available for call-in during any Water Division Emergency.
- Performs other work as required.
QUALIFICATIONS PROFILE:
Must possess and maintain a valid Connecticut Driver’s License, One-year experience in construction work is desired in addition to the ability to interpret and apply Town ordinances and permit regulations; operate a dump truck, and other basic construction equipment. Also important is the ability to relate effectively to the public and have sufficient stamina and good health to lift heavy objects and perform strenuous physical labor in all poor weather conditions such as heat, cold, rain and snow.

Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent. Must be able to use computers and other electronic devices associated with Water Division operations. Required to obtain within time requirement established by the District, the State of Connecticut Water Treatment Plant Operator and Distribution System Operator Certifications
Pay: $26.10 - $31.73 per hour
