The Driver is responsible for safely transporting individuals with disabilities, seniors, and other passengers with mobility challenges to and from medical appointments, educational programs, employment locations, community activities, and other destinations. Drivers provide courteous, reliable, and compassionate service while ensuring passenger safety, comfort, and dignity at all times.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely operate company vehicles, including wheelchair-accessible vans and buses.
- Transport passengers according to assigned schedules and routes.
- Assist passengers with boarding and exiting vehicles, including the use of wheelchair lifts, ramps, and securement systems.
- Properly secure wheelchairs, scooters, and mobility devices before transportation.
- Provide respectful and professional customer service to passengers, family members, caregivers, and facility staff.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and report maintenance concerns promptly.
- Maintain accurate trip logs, mileage records, and required transportation documentation.
- Follow all traffic laws, company policies, and safety procedures.
- Communicate delays, emergencies, accidents, or schedule changes to dispatch and management.
- Maintain passenger confidentiality and comply with applicable privacy regulations.
- Ensure vehicle cleanliness and readiness for daily operations.
- Respond appropriately to passenger needs while maintaining professional boundaries.
QualificationsRequired
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Ability to pass a background check, drug screening, and motor vehicle record review.
- Ability to safely operate wheelchair-accessible vehicles.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to lift, push, or assist mobility equipment as required.
- Dependable, punctual, and customer-service oriented.
Preferred
- Previous experience in disability transportation, paratransit, non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT), senior transportation, or public transit.
- CPR and First Aid certification.
- Defensive driving certification.
- Experience working with individuals with physical, developmental, intellectual, or behavioral disabilities.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit for extended periods while driving.
- Ability to assist passengers with mobility needs.
- Ability to operate wheelchair lifts, ramps, and securement equipment.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds when necessary.
- Ability to work in varying weather conditions.
