Job Summary
Hours: Part-time, flexible hours, 5-7 hours/week (average)
Building Goal: To maintain a high level of cleanliness, organization, and function for church services, activities, and events.
Duties
Organization and Maintenance
It is the primary responsibility of the Custodian to organize and maintain custodial storage spaces, rooms, and the sanctuary to accommodate the various functions of the church.
Reports to the Secretary when equipment is inadequate or in need of repair.
Provides the Secretary with a list of needed supplies and equipment in order to maintain cleanliness, organization, and function of church spaces.
Communicates with the Administrative Pastor if spaces are consistently misused or equipment has been mishandled.
Special Event Preparation and Support
Works closely with church member volunteers to ensure set-up and cleanup for special events.
Cleaning Task Schedule
The following tasks shall be completed on a weekly basis:
- Vacuum all carpeted areas
- Sweep and mop all non-carpeted flooring
- Clean and sanitize bathrooms
- Clean and sanitize kitchen counters
- Clean and sanitize the handwashing sink by the back door
- Straighten foyer, fellowship hall, kitchen, hallways, and classrooms
- Collect bulletins and other paper from the sanctuary for recycling
- Take out trash and recycling
- Dust or wipe surfaces
- Clean mirrors
- Take home and launder dishclothes and towels; alert secretary to take cloth tablecloths to the cleaners
- Water plants
Set-up for Sunday Services:
- Setup chairs
- Straighten sanctuary and stage
- Check all items needed for worship: candles, lighter, offering baskets, etc.
- Empty the dishwasher
- Check supply levels (coffee, communion, dish soap, hand soap, toilet paper, trash bags, dishwashing detergent, sanitizing spray)
Prep for weekly activities:
- Stack chairs
- Move pulpit and communion tables (as needed)
- Put away tables and run dishes (after potlucks)
Monthly tasks:
- Clean refrigerator and freezer (discard outdated items), clean surfaces
- Clean microwave and stove top
- Clean inside and outside of trash cans
Special month-by-month tasks:
- January: Return Christmas decor to the attic
- February: Deep clean kitchen, Wipe out cupboards and drawers, Clean the ovens, Set out lost & found items
- March: Deep clean the attic
- April: Deep clean fellowship hall
- May: Deep clean sanctuary
- June: Deep clean the basements
- July: Deep clean Godly Play classroom
- August: Deep clean nursery
- September: Deep clean the foyer
- October: Dust baseboards, ceiling corners and air vents, Change smoke detector batteries, Check fire extinguishers
- November: Deep clean library
- December: Deep clean the castle room and downstairs classroom
Light Maintenance
As time and skills allows, this position may be called upon to complete light maintenance including but not limited to:
- Interior and exterior painting
- Cleaning paint off window panes
- Replacing broken window panes
- Hanging curtains and window shades
- Frosting windows
- Spraying for spiders
- Setting traps for mice
- Minor repairs
- As time and skills allow, the custodian may plan and execute a calendar of regular building and equipment maintenance.
Grounds Goal: To maintain the grounds in such a manner that the appearance is tidy, well maintained, and safe.
- Mowing (as needed)
- Leaf/Snow Removal (as needed)
- Spreading salt for ice removal (as needed)
Immediate Supervisory: The Custodian reports to the Administrative Pastor.
Skills
- Experience in custodial services, hotel housekeeping management, or commercial cleaning environments.
- Supervisory and leadership skills with the ability to motivate volunteers effectively.
- Organizational skills for managing schedules, inventories, and quality control processes.
- Knowledge of cleaning techniques and safety regulations relevant to custodial work.
- Effective communication skills for coordinating with volunteers.
- Ability to handle multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail.
