Role of the HUD Certified Housing Counselor:
As a Housing Counselor, you will play a vital role in helping individuals and families achieve housing stability and long-term financial well-being. Through personalized counseling, education, and advocacy, you will empower clients to make informed financial decisions, overcome housing challenges, and achieve their personal goals. Whether assisting a first-time homebuyer, helping a homeowner avoid foreclosure, or coaching a family toward improved financial health, your work will have a lasting impact on the lives of the people we serve and the communities in which they live.
Housing Counselor Responsibilities:
The Housing Counselor is responsible for providing compassionate, client-centered housing counseling and financial education services while maintaining compliance with HUD, PHFA, and agency standards. Responsibilities include:
- Conduct individualized counseling sessions focused on foreclosure prevention, eviction prevention, pre-purchase and post-purchase homeownership counseling, financial literacy, budgeting, credit improvement, and debt management.
- Develop individualized action plans that help clients achieve sustainable housing and financial goals.
- Facilitate group workshops and educational programs on housing, financial literacy, and homeownership topics.
- Provide exceptional customer service by responding to client inquiries, assessing individual needs, making appropriate referrals, and providing ongoing support throughout the counseling process.
- Participate in community outreach activities and collaborate with community partners to increase awareness of myWaypoint's programs and services.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential client records using myWaypoint's client management system in accordance with HUD, PHFA, and agency policies.
- Prepare required reports, case notes, and documentation to support program compliance, funding requirements, and organizational performance.
- Participate in required training, professional development, and continuing education to maintain certifications and enhance counseling effectiveness.

Qualified candidates will possess many of the following qualifications:
- Experience in housing counseling, banking, mortgage lending, financial services, nonprofit organizations, human services, or a related field (3–5 years preferred).
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred.
- HUD Certified Housing Counselor credential or the ability and willingness to obtain certification within three months of employment (paid training and certification support provided).
- Strong knowledge of personal finance, budgeting, credit, mortgages, homeownership, and housing stability programs.
- Outstanding communication, counseling, organizational, and customer service skills.
- Ability to build trust and effectively communicate with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to maintain accurate and confidential records.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to learn agency software and technology systems.
- Flexibility to occasionally work evenings for educational workshops or community events.
- Bilingual proficiency is highly desirable.
- Valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and the ability to travel locally as needed.
- A positive attitude, collaborative spirit, adaptability, and a genuine passion for serving the community.
