JOB SUMMARY:
A Pre-Admission Testing RN, or PAT Nurse, prepares and clears all patients scheduled for surgery prior to their admission date to prevent surgery cancellations and delays. These Nurses exemplify excellent patient triage and communication/telephone skills. Prior to admission, they will complete a verbal assessment, most commonly via telephone, or possibly in person for some facilities.
The PAT RN may be responsible for chart production, nursing database, assessments, complete history and physicals, anesthesia preparation and clearance, operative consents, patient education and discharge planning. A vast knowledge of medications is also vital for this role
They confirm all pre-operative requirements are met; and will notify the surgeon and/or anesthesia team of any abnormal results of lab work and diagnostic testing; and maintain and promote patient’s safety by assessing physical and psychological needs that an individual may have prior to the date of surgery.
In some facilities, PAT Nurses may also perform diagnostic testing needed such as EKGs, blood glucose testing, urine dipsticks, drawing labs, pregnancy tests, nicotine tests, rapid Hemoglobin tests, etc.
DUTIES INCLUDE, BUT NOT LIMITED TO:
· Conduct phone assessment or interview for each surgical patient to obtain medical/surgical/social history and medication list
· Facilitate completion, or in some instances, perform basic pre-op diagnostic tests
· Review patient medical record for appropriate lab, x-ray, and EKG
· Supply physician offices with the results of all lab, x-ray, and EKG reports via fax, e-mail or e-fax
· Ensure that all appropriate orders, consents, medical and medication histories, and testing results are completed and in the patient s chart prior to the date of service
· Communicate abnormal results and medical issues to the appropriate personnel and physicians
· Provide pre-operative instructions pertaining to the individual and treatment to be provided
· Answer patient questions
· Provide clinical documentation requests by insurance companies
· Assist with post operative telephone calls
· Responsible for PAT/PreOp workflow
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, QUALIFICATION and EDUCATIONAL AND /OR EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Ø Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing (RN Program) – ADN or BSN
Ø Current RN license, in good standing with the State licensing board
Ø Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) & Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) required by start date
