Under the direct supervision of the Community Services Director, this position is responsible for performing administrative tasks and supervisory duties in relation to the special events and community programs it is responsible for. This position assists with the implementation of a comprehensive departmental program, special event programming and community enrichment through target programming. This position serves as the department’s Volunteer Coordinator and will be responsible for developing and leading volunteer efforts. Develops, implements, and executes senior programming and activities and will help represent the City on the Bicycle Advisory Committee. The leader that fills this role must be team oriented, relational, and have a high aptitude for public service. This person must understand and seek out national and local trends and have the ability to deliver passive and active citizen directed recreational needs. Expected to be committed to the department motto, doing “whatever it takes” for the success of the team and department, including performing other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
Graduation from high school or equivalency is required. A degree in recreation, physical education or a closely related field and a minimum of one (1) year experience in conducting and managing aquatics and/or special events programming is preferred. Must be able to obtain an Arizona Drivers’ License upon hire.
Physical Requirements:
This classification involves work developing and implementing parks and recreation programs. Must be able to lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds for distances of at least 100 feet. Is called upon to provide supervision and oversight of recreational programming and facility management which requires physical participation in those activities as circumstances dictate
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of the principles and practices of Parks and Recreation administration. Knowledge of special event programming, planning, philosophy, administration, and recreation philosophy. Knowledge of materials and human resources available in the Verde Valley. Knowledge of different methods and techniques of sponsoring Parks and Recreation events.
Knowledge of the principles, procedures, methods and practices for planning, implementing and maintaining a variety of recreation programs through community participation. Knowledge of City policies and procedures, community demographics and recreational issues/trends. Knowledge of first-aid procedures and facility and recreation safety practices/applications. Skill in developing and maintaining effective interpersonal relations.
Skill in interacting with the general public in a positive and educational manner. Skill in promoting the various events and programs available in the City. Skill in marketing and promotional advertising of events and programs. Skill in building and leading stakeholder action/advisory committees. Skill in written and verbal communication.
Skill in supervisory, management and leadership practices.
Ability to remain organized.
Ability to use computer systems in office/administrative functions.
Ability to establish and develop effective working relationships with fellow employees, volunteers, other department employees, various agencies, service organizations and the general public.
