Custom Home Builder - Real Estate Developer
We are a well-established custom home builder seeking an experienced, highly organized Bookkeeper/Controller to join our team on a part-time basis (3+ days per week). This position is ideal for a detail-oriented accounting professional who enjoys working in the construction industry and takes pride in maintaining accurate financial records and supporting project success.
Position Summary
The Bookkeeper/Controller will oversee the day-to-day financial and administrative operations of our custom home building company. The ideal candidate has extensive bookkeeping experience, is proficient in QuickBooks, understands construction accounting, and can manage multiple projects while maintaining exceptional attention to detail.
Responsibilities
- Manage all company banking activities, including deposits and reconciliations
- Record and reconcile accounts payable and accounts receivable
- Track customer deposits, construction draws, and payment schedules
- Prepare and manage vendor lien waivers and ensure proper documentation is collected prior to payments
- Maintain contract files and organize customer documentation
- Process vendor invoices and subcontractor payments
- Reconcile bank and credit card accounts
- Maintain accurate job cost records and allocate expenses to individual projects
- Create spreadsheets and financial reports to analyze job costing, profitability, and project performance
- Generate financial reports using QuickBooks for management review
- Assist with monthly and year-end closing procedures
- Coordinate with the company's CPA for tax preparation and financial reporting
- Maintain organized electronic and paper filing systems
- Ensure confidentiality of all financial information
Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of bookkeeping or accounting experience, preferably in residential construction or custom home building
- Strong knowledge of construction accounting and job costing
- Advanced proficiency in QuickBooks
- Excellent Microsoft Excel skills, including formulas, spreadsheets, and reporting
- Experience preparing lien waivers and managing construction documentation
- Strong understanding of contracts, draws, and project accounting
- Exceptional organizational and time-management skills
- High attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to work independently while collaborating with ownership and project managers
- Professional communication skills and a positive, team-oriented attitude
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with custom home builders, general contractors, or construction companies
- Knowledge of budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis
- Experience working with multiple projects simultaneously
Schedule
- Part-time
- Approximately 3–4 days per week (24–32 hours), with flexibility for the right candidate
- In-office position
