Veterinary Assistant Position

General Description of Position
The veterinary assistant assists the veterinary support staff and takes care of the everyday needs of pets in the hospital ward and boarding facility. A big portion of this position is maintaining the hospital facility, keeping it neat and clean.
Job Requirements/ Skills/ Physical Demands
An employee in this position must have a sense of caring for animals, be able to lift approximately 50 pounds, walk dogs of up to 130 pounds, work on feet for majority of the day.
Essential Functions
- Provide compassionate care for pets
- Restrain pets for veterinarians and technicians
- Capability to retrieve patients from clients outside during all different times of the year and bring into our facility. We are currently doing this due to COVID as clients are not coming into the clinic at this time. Must be able to tolerate being outside in cold weather for short periods of time.
- Assist in the taking of x-rays
- Monitor and collect urine and fecal samples as needed
- Monitor, record, and report physical signs of hospitalized/boarded pets
- Clean cages, runs, boarding area and/or hospital facilities, including exam rooms, treatment room, exotics and isolation area, employee lounge, bathrooms and doctor’s office
- Maintain lobby area in a neat and sanitary condition
- Provide clean bedding, water and litter pans for pets
- Feed hospitalized pets as needed
- Exercise hospitalized/boarded dogs as needed
- Take incoming pets to appropriate areas
- Bathe pets and prepare pets for dismissal
- Help retrieve pets that are being discharged
- Clean, autoclave and wrap surgical packs
- Do laundry
- Wash and sanitize pet dishes
- Perform other duties as assigned
Compensation
- Full-time = 36-40 hour work week will result in compensation by a [$ to be determined], payable every 2 weeks (following payroll deductions required by law).
- Part-time (under 35 hours/ week) = dependent on number of hours worked
- Benefits for FULL-TIME include the following elective options:
- Health Insurance (50% employer compensation) – after first 60 days on the job.
- Dental Insurance (50% employer compensation) – after first 60 days on the job.
- Vision Insurance (75% employer compensation- after first 60 days on the job.

- [TBD] hours of paid time off (combination “sick” and vacation time). If full-time employee: 40 hours PTO yearly for first 2 years at the clinic. This would increase to 80 hours per year after 2 year with the clinic (upon employer discretion).
Schedule for this Position
- Schedule can be determined based on hospital and individual preferences/ needs, however, would prefer schedule to be consistent week-to-week. Majority of work hours occurring during hospital operational hours.
- No on-call or emergency time required
