Position Overview
The Art Teacher is responsible for delivering engaging, standards-aligned visual arts instruction that builds technical skill, creativity, and confidence. The ideal candidate believes all students are artists, values structure and routines, and integrates art history, culture, and reflection into instruction.
Key Responsibilities
Instruction & Curriculum
- Plan and deliver rigorous, middle school age-appropriate visual arts lessons aligned to state standards
- Teach a range of media (e.g., drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed media, digital art as applicable)
- Integrate art history, cultural context, and contemporary artists into instruction
- Design projects that build skills, creativity, and perseverance
Classroom Culture & Student Support
- Establish clear routines and expectations that support a safe, joyful studio environment
- Build strong relationships with students and families
- Support diverse learners, including MLLs and students with varying skill levels
- Collaborate with deans and counselors to support student behavior and engagement
Assessment & Feedback
- Assess student work using clear rubrics aligned to learning goals
- Provide timely, actionable feedback to support growth
- Maintain accurate grades, attendance, and documentation
Collaboration & Professional Responsibilities
- Collaborate with grade-level teams and leadership
- Participate in professional development, coaching, and school-wide events
- Contribute to exhibitions, showcases, or school culture events
- Communicate regularly with families about student progress
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required (Art Education or related field preferred)
- New York State certification preferred or willingness to pursue certification
- Experience teaching middle school students strongly preferred
- Strong classroom management and organizational skills
- Commitment to equity, high expectations, and continuous improvement
- Ability to engage and motivate diverse learners
Preferred
- Master’s degree in education or related field
- At least 2 years of middle school teaching experience
- Experience in urban or charter school environments
- Familiarity with data-driven instruction and literacy development
