I'm Mike Walsh - the Owner - you will be working directly with me.
You should keep reading this if…
- You love dynamic situations where you can organize people and resources for maximum effectiveness.
- You hate wasting time, and you have a strong inner drive to do what's required when it's required - if not before.
What it's like to work with me…
- I like having fun at whatever I'm doing (which made my former corporate masters very twitchy) and I want my people to have fun too. If we're not having fun at this, then what are we doing?
- I think and solve problems out loud. Some call it spit-balling. Some call it verbal ideation. If you need firm answers more than half-formed ideas, this will make you crazy, and I'm probably not for you.
- I like seeing the humor in a situation and seeing the positive side of life.
- I appreciate the uniqueness in everyone.
- I seek to capitalize on everyone's strengths and make their weaknesses irrelevant.
- I prefer a coaching style of leadership... which means I'll be asking you way more questions and giving you far fewer answers.
- I speak plainly, and what you see is what you get.
- I love winning, and I want to create an environment where everybody, including you, is winning.
We're a small, premium painting company serving lake homes and busy professionals around Lake Geneva and northern Illinois. People hire us because they never want to think about the project. We handle every detail and stand behind it with a three-year, no-questions guarantee nobody else in our market puts in writing. That standard runs through everything we do, and it runs through this seat.
This is one job doing the work of three: taking excellent care of customers, running our marketing programs, and owning the software that ties it all together. If that sounds like too much, it isn't. For the right person, three lanes is the reason you're never bored. For the wrong person, it's a rough month. Read on and be honest with yourself about which one you are.
What you'd actually do
Be the front door. You're the first voice a new customer hears — fast, warm, genuinely human. You book estimates and hand our sales rep clean, qualified appointments so he can do his best work. When a job is in progress, you're the calm, communicative presence a premium brand is supposed to have. This is the heartbeat of the role.
Run our growth programs. Email reactivation, referrals, direct mail, social. You'll turn finished projects into marketing — the before/afters, the reviews, the proof. (Some creative production may be handled by an outside partner; you direct and coordinate it rather than shoot every video yourself.)
Own the systems. HubSpot, Estimate Rocket, RingCentral, our scheduling tools — you don't just use these, you run them. Keep the data honest, build the process, and write it down so the business doesn't live in one person's head. This is the discipline that lets a small company punch above its weight.
About YOU — the part that actually decides this
Here's the one non-negotiable, and I'm shining a spotlight on it so nobody's surprised later:
You have to like software. Not "tolerate it"... like it. You're the kind of person who, handed a platform you've never seen, leans in and starts messing around with it instead of heaving a deep and weary sigh. Learning and running new tools should give you energy, not drain it.
I'm dead serious about this one, because it's the exact thing this seat lives or dies on. If technology stresses you out, this isn't the role for you... and that is completely okay, no judgment. We'd just both save ourselves a rough six months. The person who's great at this job gets a small, genuine thrill out of taking a messy system and making it clean.
Beyond that: you're warm with people, organized to a fault, and you take ownership. Handed something with no process, you build one instead of waiting to be told how. You don't need a marketing degree — you need curiosity, follow-through, and the confidence to run your own lane.
Where this goes
This is not a dead-end coordinator seat. As we grow toward the next stage of the business, this role grows into owning our entire marketing and customer-experience program. This is the natural seed for a marketing/operations lead. If running paid advertising (Facebook, Google) is already in your wheelhouse or something you'd like to grow into, even better — bringing that in-house is one of the doors this seat can open over time. If you're ambitious and want a place to grow into, that's the plan, and I'll tell you so to your face in the interview.
