Full TIME FIREFIGHTER/EMT
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The primary mission of a firefighter is to proactively and effectively protect all citizens and visitors through prevention, inspection education and ongoing training programs ensuring safety of the community we serve. Firefighters perform general duty firefighting work involving combating and extinguishing fires; various types of rescues, hazmat response, and life support functions and other related duties including, but not limited to transportation to hospitals; specialized duties under emergency conditions which frequently involve considerable personal hazard and weather conditions; and related work as required. A firefighter is subject to being called in at any time in cases of emergency or need. As a firefighter with the City of Ecorse, employees will perform all duties under close supervision of senior firefighters and Command Officers. These examples are intended merely as illustrations of the various types or work performed in positions allocated to this classification and do not include all of the duties an employee in this class may be required to perform.
Responding to a wide variety of emergencies.
Protecting the life and property of others.
Perform all aspects of fire suppression and overhaul.
Clean, operate and maintain a variety of equipment.
Perform rescue operations in a variety of conditions.
Work with the public on fire prevention.
Work with other departments and agencies within and outside the city.
Drive a city vehicle in both emergency and non-emergency circumstances.
Complete various reports, documents and logs.
Attend training classes and maintain various certifications.
Respond to emergency medical calls.
Fulfill all of the requirements of probation firefighter as set forth in Department
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Applicant must be at least 18 years of age
Citizen of the United States
Valid Michigan Driver’s License
Satisfactory Driving Record
High School Diploma or G.E.D. Certificate
Copy of EMT Certificate
Hazardous Materials Operations Certification
No felony or serious misdemeanor convictions
MFFTC Firefighter I/II Certificate
All candidates must pass a background investigation, psychological and physical exams and drug screening.
**Must have current State of Michigan Basic EMT License
Preferential Consideration:
Highest preference will be given to those candidates who possess all desired qualifications.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Given the varied duties and responsibilities of a firefighter, both physical and mental, the desired qualifications are also varied. The following is a list of some of the desired qualities:
An interest in and an aptitude for firefighting and emergency medical services.
The ability to work well with others including co-workers, senior officers and to maintain a courteous relationship with the general public.
Maintain good physical and mental health.
Ability to learn streets and layout of community; including hydrant locations.
Ability to observe and monitor people’s behavior to assess patient condition.
Ability to satisfactorily complete required training and maintain certifications.
Ability to react competently, quickly and calmly in emergency conditions.
Ability and strength for prolonged and arduous work under adverse conditions; ability to rely on senses of sight and hearing to help determine the nature of emergency and make operational decisions.
Ability to cooperate with supervisors and to accept lines of authority.
Ability to effectively use Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and protective clothing to prevent exposure to hazardous materials and infectious diseases.
Ability to analyze problems and to present facts and recommendations effectively in both oral and written form.
Ability to clearly communicate procedures, problems, and policies with fellow coworkers and the public in a tactful and courteous manner.
Skill or ability to attain skill in the use of fire and emergency apparatus and equipment.
Ability to quickly learn firefighting techniques, emergency medical care techniques, and the operation of all department apparatus and equipment.
Demonstrate attention to detail and importance of responsiveness to internal and external situations.

Pay: $28.95 per hour
