Gas Station Associate (Cashier / Cook)

Best Trip is a family-run gas station and convenience store serving the south side Des Moines community for over 23 years. We are hiring Gas Station Associates for cashier and cook/attendant positions our small team. Part-time and full-time shifts available with flexible scheduling to fit your availability.
Cashier Duties:
- Greet customers warmly and provide fast, friendly service at the counter
- Operate the register and accurately process cash, card, debit, and lottery transactions
- Count and balance your cash drawer at the start and end of each shift
- Check ID for all age-restricted sales including tobacco, lottery, and alcohol
- Handle customer questions, concerns, and complaints in a professional and courteous manner
- Restock front-counter merchandise, snacks, and beverages as needed during your shift
- Monitor and maintain a clean, organized checkout area and sales floor throughout the shift
- Accept and process fuel payments and assist customers with pump-related issues
- Receive and verify incoming deliveries and vendor drop-offs when needed
- Follow all store policies, safety procedures, and cash-handling protocols
- Report any suspicious activity, safety hazards, or equipment issues to management promptly
- Assist with opening and closing duties as assigned
- Sweep and mop the sales floor regularly throughout the shift
- Wipe down counters, displays, coffee stations, and self-serve food areas
- Empty trash cans and replace liners inside the store and at the entrance
- Clean and restock restrooms on a scheduled basis throughout the shift
- Clean fuel pump areas, wipe down pump handles and screens, and pick up litter around the lot
- Keep windows, doors, and entryways clean and free of smudges and debris
Cook / Attendant Duties:
- Prepare and cook hot food items (pizza, hot dogs, breakfast sandwiches, etc.)
- Maintain food safety and cleanliness standards in the kitchen and prep areas
- Stock shelves, coolers, and displays; rotate stock and check expiration dates
- Keep store, restrooms, and food prep areas clean throughout your shift
- Assist with deliveries and inventory as needed
- Clean and sanitize all food prep surfaces, equipment, and utensils after each use
- Wash dishes, trays, tongs, and other kitchen tools regularly throughout the shift
- Empty grease traps and clean fryers, grills, and warming equipment as scheduled
- Dispose of food waste properly and maintain a clean and odor-free kitchen area
- Sweep and mop kitchen and back-of-house floors at regular intervals
- Take out trash from kitchen and food prep areas and replace liners
- Conduct end-of-shift deep clean of all cooking and prep stations
Pay:
- Starting at $15/hour
- Flexible Scheduling
Requirements:
- Must be 18 or older
- Reliable, punctual, and a team player
- Ability to stand for full shifts and lift up to [25–50] lbs
- Weekend and holiday availability a plus
- IMPACT certification required, or willingness to obtain within 2 weeks of hire
- PLEDGE certification required, or willingness to obtain within 2 weeks of hire
Pay: From $15.00 per hour
