Position Summary
The Plant Health Care (PHC) Technician is responsible for evaluating, diagnosing, and treating trees and shrubs to promote long-term health and vitality. This role performs integrated pest management (IPM), fertilization, soil health improvements, disease and insect treatments, growth regulator applications, and preventive maintenance using industry best practices. The PHC Technician serves as a knowledgeable representative of the company while delivering safe, professional, and environmentally responsible services to residential, commercial, and municipal clients.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Inspect trees and shrubs for signs of insect infestations, disease, nutrient deficiencies, and environmental stress.
- Apply fertilizers, insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, growth regulators, and other plant health treatments in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Perform soil health services including:
- Deep root fertilization
- Soil amendments
- Aeration
- Vertical mulching
- Biochar or compost applications (when applicable)
- Diagnose plant health issues and recommend treatment plans.
- Identify common tree species, pests, and diseases.
- Maintain accurate treatment records and application logs.
- Safely mix, transport, and apply chemicals following label instructions and company safety procedures.
- Operate spray equipment, injection systems, spreaders, skid sprayers, tanks, and other PHC equipment.
- Perform routine inspections and maintenance on PHC vehicles and equipment.
- Communicate professionally with customers regarding services performed and treatment recommendations.
- Identify opportunities for additional tree care services and communicate recommendations to Sales Arborists or management.
- Assist crews with tree preservation during construction projects when needed.
- Maintain compliance with OSHA, EPA, state pesticide regulations, and company safety policies.
- Participate in ongoing training and continuing education related to arboriculture and plant health care.
- Assist with snow removal, storm response, or other operational needs when required.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Prior experience in arboriculture, landscaping, horticulture, forestry, agriculture, or plant health care preferred.
- Ability to identify common tree species or willingness to learn.
- Working knowledge of tree pests, diseases, and nutrient deficiencies preferred.
- Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
- Ability to obtain and maintain applicable state pesticide applicator licenses.
- ISA Certified Arborist certification preferred (or willingness to obtain).
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is a plus but not required.

- Ability to diagnose problems and recommend effective treatment solutions.
- Safe handling of pesticides and application equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret product labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
- Strong attention to detail and documentation.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to use tablets or mobile devices for work orders and treatment documentation.
Pay: $18.00 - $24.00 per hour
