Key Responsibilities:
- Ensuring a safe working environment and assist in providing the resources necessary to send our people home safe (Safety First).
- Act as a resource to support the General Superintendent, Project Superintendent, Foreman, Project Managers and Group Manager.
- Align with the Project assigned teams and assist in coordinating the construction of the projects to a successful result for both the client and Miller Bros. Const. (Act with Integrity).
- Providing the highest level of Client Satisfaction (Strive for Excellence).
- Coordinating with the Project team (Project and Field Management) to meet critical interim and final completion dates (Teamwork).
- Effectively communicating with critical contributors involved in the projects (Build Trust).
- Supporting the Project Manager and Project Supt. to maximize project profits.
- Assisting in effectively managing the project manpower and equipment resources with approval of the Project Manager to meet the needs of the project to ensure completion while meeting or beating project estimated hours for all cost activities.
- Ensuring effective coordination between the Structures Project team and the dirt/drainage project crews/teams to streamline construction for the benefit of the whole project.
- Ensuring accurate and timely communication of project information and coordination with the Project Team and the General Superintendent.
- Maintaining a positive attitude and good working relationships with the project teams, customers, employees, and the public.
- Monitor resource trends and how they might impact our ability to be more productive without jeopardizing safety (Constantly Learn).
The Assistant General Superintendent reports to the General Superintendent and has no direct authority over project related decisions as those default to the Project Manager/Superintendent as the Assistant General Superintendent and the General Superintendent are to serve as a resource to support the needs of the project team. The Assistant General Superintendent shall initiate regular communication with the General Superintendent, Superintendents, Foremen, Project Managers, Safety Directors and Equipment Manager on concerns which may impact project operations.
Job Responsibilities:
Labor Resources
- Work with Superintendents, Foremen, and Project Managers to understand project schedules and to aid in developing workforce needs.
- Coordinate the assignment of Superintendents and Foreman to projects in collaboration with the General Superintendent and the assigned Project Manager for the project. Final assignment decisions are subject to approval of the Group Manager or V.P.
- Coordinate assigning required trades personnel for out-of-town work.
- Be familiar with union labor contracts and serve as the contact person for union representatives in assigning trades and pre-construction activities.
- Ensure proper training for employees (i.e. certified crane operators, certified welding certificates, work zone traffic supervisor, etc.).
- Monitor company EEO & OJT goals to meet or exceed requirements.
- Attend bi-weekly company scheduling meetings.
- Attend bi-weekly structure group staff meetings.
- Visit each project as the needs of the project and experience of the project team dictate. Contact via other means (Phone, e-mail, text) shall happen at least once per week should a project visit not be necessary. During each visit, the following shall be accomplished.
- Ensure company safety culture.
- Review short term and long-term goals with the Project Manager and Superintendent. Review the current and anticipated project resource needs (labor, equipment, and materials) and discuss with the project team. Coordinate and reallocate resource needs as agreed upon by the Project Managers for both the current and affected projects.
- Troubleshoot and discuss future potential areas of concern.
- Share any approved company communications/directives with the Project Managers, Superintendents and the Foreman as required for consistent, timely, and concise communication.
- Mentor as appropriate.
Equipment Resources/Inventory Resources
- Work with the General Superintendent, Superintendents, Foremen, and Project Managers to review project schedules and develop/update equipment needs.
- The Assistant General Superintendent will work directly with the General Superintendent and the Equipment Dispatcher to assign specific equipment at the start of the project and specialty equipment (cranes, bidwell, attachments, etc.) during the life of the projects.
- Work with the Equipment Dispatcher to release equipment when not needed after confirmation with the Project Team (Supt & PM).
- The Equipment Manager coordinates all project equipment resource needs and reviews with the VP’s at a bi-weekly scheduling meeting. The goal is to optimize the utilization of company owned equipment and minimize the need for outside rentals. Therefore, the Equipment Manager has final decision making authority in the assignment of equipment resources when conflict arises.
- Monitor Weekly equipment utilization reports and initiate conversations with the project team for underutilized equipment and for hour meter records that are incomplete.
- Fully understand company owned resources/supplies (i.e. formwork, building materials, steel sheet piling, rebar, portable concrete barrier, hardware, lumber, etc.). Keep accurate inventories to aid in making educated decisions on allocating these resources.
- Help oversee and organize structure material inventories that are stored and shipped out of MBC Yard. This includes formwork, lumber, building materials, piling, sheet piling, etc.
Safety
- Ensure Superintendents, foremen and crews comply with OSHA Standards, MSHA Standards and the MBC Safety Programs This includes knowing and applying proper safety practices for field operations, insuring PPE (i.e.: Personal Protective Equipment) is available/properly utilized, and that trained personnel are utilized (i.e.: competent person, traffic supervisor, etc.). Issue safety violation notices to Superintendents, foremen and employees who fail to comply after review by the Safety Director as our goal is zero incidents.
- Coordinate and communicate with the General Superintendent, Project Manager and Safety Managers regarding operations means and methods that require advance notice when putting our personnel in situations that are not common practice in order to address them proactively and ensure that a safe work practice plan is in place prior to the work starting (i.e.: traffic control plans, Traffic Control Standards, site specific fall protection plans, PPE…).
- Monitor that project supervision conduct and document daily Site Sense talks.
- Coordinate with the Superintendents, Foremen, Project Managers and Safety Manager assigned to your projects to aid in correcting items identified in site safety inspections.
Project Quality, Schedule and Budget
- Monitor work performed by the group to ensure it meets or exceeds specifications. Our goal is zero re-work and zero punch lists. Ensure corrective work is corrected as soon as possible. Coordinate with the Project Manager to ensure superintendents, foremen and crews understand the scope of work detailed and specifications for each item of work performed.
- Be aware of field progress vs. schedule milestone dates. Work with and assist the Project Manager and Superintendents to ensure we maintain zero or positive float. Aid in developing a recovery schedule with the Project Manager and Superintendents, when necessary.
- Monitor HCSS Heavy Job weekly man-hour reports (budget vs. actual) for active cost codes on the projects as time permits and to aid in identifying problem areas as requested. Coordinate with the Project Manager and Superintendents to implement solutions to keep the project cost at or below estimated cost when possible.
- Work with the project team to mitigate risk as situations arise.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field
- or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
Experience:
- 10 years experience as a Bridge Superintendent
- Proven leadership experience in large-scale public construction or heavy civil/infrastructure projects
- Strong understanding of public contracting, bidding processes, and regulatory compliance
- Strong financial and operational management skills
- Excellent communication skills both written and oral
- Demonstrates and has a proven ability to lead and possesses leadership skills that are in sync with MBCH core values
