POSITION SUMMARY:
The Recreation Assistant assists in the planning, organizing and. directing activity programs for residents. Recreation may include sports, dramatics, nature study, social recreation, games and arts and crafts in accord with resident’s needs. The Recreation Assistant prepares reports on the residents’ progress as may be required.
RESPONSIBILITIES/ ACCOUNTABLITIES:
1 Assists in planning and promoting recreation based on the needs and interests of the resident;
2 Encourages social communication through group recreation;
3 Provides programs of sensory training, reality orientation, re-motivation and re-socialization on an individual and group basis;
4 Assists residents with participation in religious programs;
5 Assists residents with leisure recreation;
6 Visits bed-ridden residents and non-participants and provides appropriate recreation services;
7 Assists with the daily radio program, the monthly newsletter and recreation calendar;
8 Documents resident attendance, and participation level, at recreation programs; may assist with maintaining pertinent card files and writing progress notes, if applicable;
9 Attends appropriate in-service training programs;
10 Assists in the maintenance, storage, and use of the recreation department supplies;
11 Performs other responsibilities as directed by the Recreation Director;
12 Assists with set up of volunteer program and appreciation;
13 Assists in transporting residents to and from recreation programs;
14 Assists with admission assessments, clinical responsibilities: MDS, care plans and progress notes;
15 Assists with resident council’s purpose, attendance, and outcomes;
16 Facilitates community interaction programs;
17 Ensures that residents and families receive the highest quality of service in a caring and compassionate atmosphere which recognizes the individuals’ needs and rights;
18 Performs other duties as requested.
SPECIFIC EDUCATIONAL/ VOCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
1 High school degree or equivalent;
2 Certification in accordance with regulatory agencies governing the facility.
3 Must be able to read, write and understand the English language.
JOB SKILLS:
1 Effective communicator with excellent verbal/written skills.
2 Well-developed organizational abilities.
3 Some craft ability/knowledge.
4 Perform record keeping and documentation, as necessary.
5 Ability to positively interact with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel and the general public.
6 Provide annual verification of a negative TB skin test.
PERFORMS RELATED DUTIES:
1 Interacts with residents, families, visitors and employees.
2 Carries out other tasks as requested in situations where hands-on intervention/participation may be required.
