NC CIVIL is a Greenville, North Carolina–based nonprofit dedicated to building capacity in local communities to address persistent population disparities. Our work centers on supporting residents, community partners, and local institutions in building the relationships, knowledge, and structures needed to build resiliency at the neighborhood and community level where life is experienced. At the heart of this work is our ONE Carolina strong neighborhoods initiative. ONE Carolina is grounded in the belief that sustainable change happens when residents are not only engaged, but empowered with information, relationships, and opportunities to shape their own economic, social, and cultural environments. The initiative meets people where they are and supports shared learning and coordinated action across community and institutional boundaries. The ONE Carolina Initiative operates through three integrated components: CIVILab: A CommUNITY Colaboratory CIVILab functions as both a physical gathering space and an increasingly important virtual collaboration hub, allowing participation across geographic, institutional, and time constraints. Through facilitated learning sessions, collaborative research projects, data exploration, and shared documentation, the lab helps participants better understand the structural, social, and neighborhood-level factors contributing to local disparities. Importantly, CIVILab is not just a place for analysis—it is a space for codifying community voice, relationships, and resources for stronger local alignment. By organizing insights, data, and contributions in accessible ways, the lab helps translate learning into tools that can inform outreach, organizing, and coordinated action across the broader initiative.
