Job Summary
The Assistant Accounting Manager supports the Accounting Manager in overseeing daily accounting operations, financial reporting, month-end close, and compliance activities. This role requires strong experience with Deltek Costpoint, government contract accounting, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). The ideal candidate will assist in maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring regulatory compliance, and improving accounting processes within a government contracting environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in managing the daily operations of the accounting department.
- Support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes.
- Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial reports.
- Maintain the general ledger and ensure the accuracy of financial transactions.
- Utilize Deltek Costpoint to manage project accounting, billing, accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets, and general ledger activities.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, FAR, DFARS, and DCAA regulations.
- Assist with indirect rate calculations, cost pools, and project cost allocations.
- Support internal and external audits by preparing schedules and responding to auditor requests.
- Review project setup and contract accounting for accuracy.
- Monitor cash flow, account balances, and financial performance.
- Assist in developing and maintaining accounting policies and internal controls.
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting procedures and system efficiencies.
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff, providing training and performance feedback.
- Collaborate with Finance, Contracts, Payroll, and Program Management teams to resolve accounting issues.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
- 5–8 years of progressive accounting experience.
- Hands-on experience with Deltek Costpoint.
- Experience in government contracting accounting.
- Strong understanding of:
- GAAP
- FAR
- DCAA compliance
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, formulas).
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications.
- 2+ years of supervisory or team leadership experience preferred.
- Experience with project accounting and government contract billing.
- Experience supporting DCAA audits and incurred cost submissions.
- Knowledge of Deltek Time & Expense and Cognos reporting is a plus.
