SALARY RANGE: $21.87 – $22.89 - $24.06 - $25.32 - $26.61
(Placement may be made up through the third step based on experience according to merit system rules.)
HOURS: 5.25 Hours per day
WORK YEAR: 9 months per year (202 Days)
LOCATION: Glendora High School
BEGINNING DATE OF EMPLOYMENT: Upon Selection and fingerprint clearance from the Department of Justice. There is a fee to process fingerprints with the Department of Justice.
JOB SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Executive Director of Teaching, Learning & Accountability, assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to individuals or small groups of limited or non-English speaking students or basic sign language interpretation; translation of curriculum in a classroom environment by translating written materials and oral lectures; assist in the preparation of instructional materials and implementation of lesson plans; provide routine clerical support.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Instructional Assistant – Bilingual provides instructional assistance to general and/or special education classrooms and/or for subject matter tutoring, where activities can be carried out by an incumbent who meets district and state requirements, as well as ‘tested’ bilingual/bi-literate skills or is capable of signing in a limited classroom and related education environments. Instructional Assistants also require knowledge, skill, and ability to work with special student populations who rotate from special education to general education classrooms. Advancement potential exists to higher levels of paraeducator support. These positions may have unique titles, qualifications, and require certification based on the level of need to serve students.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Perform a variety of clerical duties in support of classroom activities such as preparing, typing, duplicating and filing instructional materials; grade student tests and assignments; record grades; maintain student records and files as assigned.
Assist students in completing classroom assignments, homework and projects; assure student understanding of classroom rules and procedures; assist students by answering questions, providing proper examples, emotional support, friendly attitude and general guidance.
Those capable, may interpret for deaf or hearing-impaired students in a variety of educational settings, including, but not limited to, classroom lectures and activities, group discussions, assemblies, and counseling sessions, using various sign language systems and voice interpretation at a normal conversational rate.
Provide signing to-and-from parents. Attend conferences when signing is required.
Read books to students and observe their reading abilities as assigned; assist students with letter and word pronunciation and recognition; assist students with spelling and writing exercises and assignments.
Observe and control behavior of students in the classroom according to approved procedures; monitor students during outdoor activities as directed; report progress regarding student performance and behavior.
Assist assigned teacher with the implementation of lesson plans; administer various tests as directed; prepare mandated reports and documentation as required.
Operate a variety of classroom and office equipment including a computer, copier, overhead projector and laminator as assigned.
Accompanies students going from one location to another.
May provide classroom support to the teacher by setting up work areas and displays, and distributing and collecting paper, supplies and materials.
Assure the health and safety of students by following established practices and procedures; maintain a learning environment in a safe, orderly and clean manner.
May serve as an interpreter for parent conferences and telephone calls as needed; translate school and District-related written material for students as assigned.
Attend meetings and in-services as assigned.
OTHER DUTIES: Perform tasks and responsibilities within your current job level, including but not limited to those below your current level, to ensure efficient operations and support the overall success of the team.
Perform related duties as assigned, which are within the scope of the duties in this job classification.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
Any combination equivalent to: a High School diploma or equivalent and some experience working with children in an organized setting, plus bilingual skills.
Licenses and other Requirements:
Valid First Aid/CPR certification within one (1) year of hire.
May require a valid California Driver’s License.
Knowledge of:
Correct oral and written usage of English and a designated second language.
Child guidance principles and practices.
Safe practices in classroom activities.
Basic subjects taught in local schools, including arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language and reading.
Basic instructional methods and techniques.
Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
Classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct.
Operation of standard office and classroom equipment.
Oral and written communication skills.
Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
Basic record-keeping techniques.
Ability to:
Assist with instruction and related activities in a classroom or assigned learning environment.
Reinforce instruction to individual or small groups of students as directed by the teacher.
Assist in the preparation of instructional materials and implementation of lesson plans.
Read, write, translate and interpret English and a designated second language.
