As a Department Manager, you play a key leadership role in the restaurant. Beyond managing shifts, you’ll help develop team members, improve performance, and support the business's overall success.
This position is designed for experienced Shift Managers or leaders from restaurant, retail, or hospitality backgrounds who are ready to take on greater responsibility. You’ll help guide the team, oversee key areas of the operation, and build the next generation of leaders.
What You’ll Do
Department Managers typically oversee one of the restaurant’s core operational areas:
Guest Experience

Ensure guests receive fast, friendly service across the dining room, drive-thru, and front counter

Lead customer service training and support promotional initiatives

Motivate team members to deliver a positive guest experience
Kitchen Operations

Maintain high standards for food quality, safety, and preparation

Monitor food costs and product usage

Train kitchen team members on procedures, equipment, and new menu items
People & Staffing

Support hiring, training, and scheduling of team members

Help develop crew members and future leaders

Recognize strong performance and encourage a positive team culture
In addition, Department Managers help lead shifts, coach crew and shift managers, monitor performance goals, and maintain a productive work environment.
Career Growth: Path to General Manager
Strong Department Managers have the opportunity to advance to General Manager, a salaried leadership position responsible for overseeing the entire restaurant operation.
Future leaders may also participate in advanced leadership training programs, including courses at Hamburger University in Chicago, McDonald’s world-class management development center.
