Job Summary
The Clinic Staff Nurse is an integral part of the health care team. The Clinical Staff nurse assists the health care team in a professional manner in the community health center setting; assists the physician and mid-level providers in the examination and treatment of patients under the direction of the Chief Medical Officer. Responsibilities include administering quality nursing care and health education to patients of all ages in accordance with established nursing standards; assisting in the lab as appropriate; working with all Tejas personnel to ensure an efficient and save environment of care.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Provides Clinical Services
- Maintain ongoing tracking and appropriate documentation on patient/customer service, in accordance with Tejas’ policies and procedures in a timely, accurate, and consistent manner to promote team awareness and ensure patient safety. This tracking may use an IT database.
- Ensure complete and accurate registration, including patient demographic and current insurance information.
- Maintains clinical expertise and competency (to include age specific competency) as well as demonstrates through knowledge of procedures to deliver quality primary health care in coordination with the health care team.
- Interacts with health center personnel and assists providers to ensure optimal patient care and to obtain optimum patient flow and increased patient satisfaction.
- Provides in person, by telephone, or by mail health care/management, education and support regarding diagnosis and plan of care and regarding preventative and maintenance care.
- Identifies and responds promptly to changes in patient’s condition and/or clinic environment.
- Coordinates and delegates the timely processing of patient referrals, prescribed medications, and other identified needs of the patient.
- Identify and utilize cultural and community resources. Establish and maintain relationships with identified service providers.

- Acts as a resource within the clinic to other staff members in regards to patient care.
- Participates as a team member and promotes teamwork by working with others both within and outside the organization to provide optimal patient care and to support the team approach.
- Maintains adequate inventory of medical forms, supplies, in-house medications,
STD medications and immunizations and completes monthly inventory reports as required.
- Performs maintenance and controls on medical equipment and documents results.
- Administers all medications accurately using the five (5) rights of medication administration, documenting medications according to health center policy and procedures.
- Upon completion of laboratory skill assessment, performs all laboratory functions according to Provider orders.
- Prepare treatment rooms for examination of patients
- Interview patients, measure vital signs (pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight and height) and record information in patient’s medical record
- Assist health care provider during the course of the examination, procedure, or during the course of obtaining laboratory specimens, such as pap smears and cultures
- Administers nebulizer treatments, injections or vaccinations, give medication as ordered by provider
- Performs EKG’s as ordered or O2 saturation tests
- Assist with other procedures
- Applies wound dressings, splints, other medical devices
- Explain treatment procedures to patients
- Notify patients in writing or over the phone of lab results according to providers’ instructions. May also refill medicines over the phone or by fax as per provider orders Answer phone messages assigned by providers.
- Schedule diagnostic tests or make specialist appointments as ordered by providers
- Draw and collect blood samples from patients and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis
- Utilize CLIA waived laboratory testing instruments to analyze blood or urine samples
- Perform quality control activities as indicated or instructed
- Clean and restock rooms
- Assist with management of supplies
- Clean and package instruments for sterilization
- Assist clerical personnel with clinic check in and check-out procedures as needed
- Answer clinic phone and assist patients over the phone as needed

- Work with teammates for efficient and quality care of patients
- Assist with other clinical and clerical duties as required
- Preforms all other duties as assigned within the Texas Scope of Practice Guidelines
2. Fulfills administrative duties.
- Assists in maintaining an efficient, safe, secure, orderly, and aseptic environment of care for all patients and employees.
- Is familiar with and abides by OSHA Standards, Hazardous Materials,
Universal Precautions, use of personal protective equipment, Evacuation, Fire,Disaster, and Safety Plans.
- If bilingual, translates in Spanish between non-Spanish speaking staff and
Spanish speaking patients as requested.
- Maintains a high level of ethical conduct regarding confidentiality, dual- relationships, and professional stature
- Completes job related training assignments and development opportunities in new tasks and technologies.
- Attends meetings as appropriate and meets regularly with supervisor to exchange pertinent information and receive supervision.
3. Performs all other duties as assigned within the Texas Scope of Practice Guidelines.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Required
Proficiency in basic nursing skills and knowledge of the Texas Nursing Practice Act

Experience with office equipment including but not limited to computers, fax machines, telephones and copiers
Credentials and Experience
Required
Graduate from an accredited high school or GED program
Licensed Vocational Nurse degree from an accredited school of nursing.

Current unrestricted license from the Texas Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners to practice as a licensed vocational nurse (LVN) in the State of Texas
Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for Healthcare Professionals Certification
Preferred
One (1) year of practice experience as an LVN giving direct patient care
Special Requirements
The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. This position requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye/hand coordination; sitting, standing and walking for extensive periods of time; working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours; and frequent exposure to communicable diseases, body fluids, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to work with a moderate noise level in the work environment is also required.
