### Position Summary
We are seeking a reliable and detail-oriented **Janitor** to maintain the highest standards of cleanliness, safety, and functionality in our preschool childcare facility. The Janitor plays a critical role in supporting daily operations by performing cleaning, routine maintenance, and meal delivery services across the center. This position ensures full compliance with New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) regulations, prioritizes child safety at all times, and helps create a clean, healthy, and orderly environment that supports the well-being and development of young children.
The ideal candidate is proactive, trustworthy, and capable of working independently while collaborating effectively with teaching staff, administration, and other team members.
### Key Responsibilities
- **Facility Cleaning and Sanitization**: Thoroughly clean and supply all areas of the childcare facility, including classrooms, hallways, restrooms, pantry/kitchen areas, common spaces, and outdoor entry points. Duties include dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, sanitizing surfaces, disinfecting high-touch areas, and removing trash and recycling in accordance with DOHMH health and sanitation standards.
- **Routine Maintenance and Inspections**: Perform regular inspections of the facility to identify potential safety hazards, maintenance needs, or deficiencies. Conduct preventive maintenance tasks and make minor repairs or adjustments (e.g., fixing minor leaks, replacing light bulbs, tightening fixtures) as needed.
- **Meal Preparation and Delivery**: Prepare and deliver nutritious meals and snacks (breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snacks) to classrooms following proper food handling, storage, and sanitation protocols. Ensure timely distribution while maintaining food safety and temperature control standards.
- **Supply Management**: Monitor, stock, and organize supply rooms, cleaning closets, and pantry inventory. Maintain accurate records of supplies and notify management when restocking is required.
- **Reporting and Communication**: Promptly notify the Education Director, Site Director, or designated management of any observed deficiencies, repair needs, safety concerns, or maintenance issues to ensure timely resolution.
- **Health and Safety Compliance**: Strictly adhere to all DOHMH regulations, childcare licensing requirements, and center-specific health and safety policies. This includes proper use of cleaning chemicals, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and implementation of infection control procedures.
- **Team Collaboration**: Work cooperatively with teachers, administrative staff, and other team members to support the overall mission of the childcare center. Maintain a positive, professional attitude and contribute to a respectful and supportive work environment.
- **Additional Duties**: Perform other related tasks as assigned by management to support the smooth operation of the facility.
### Qualifications and Requirements
- **Experience**: Proven working experience as a janitor, custodian, or in a similar maintenance role, preferably in a childcare, school, or institutional setting.
- **Physical Abilities**: Ability to handle heavy tasks with ease, including lifting, carrying, and moving objects up to 50 lbs., standing for extended periods, and performing repetitive physical activities.
- **Knowledge and Skills**:
- Strong knowledge of cleaning chemicals, supplies, and safe handling procedures.
- Familiarity with DOHMH regulations and best practices for childcare facility sanitation and safety.
- **Certifications**: Current Food Handler Certificate (or willingness to obtain one promptly if pending).
- **Education**: High school diploma or equivalent required.
- **Personal Attributes**: Demonstrated integrity, reliability, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Strong attention to detail, time-management skills, and a genuine commitment to child safety and well-being.
- **Other**: Must pass all required background checks, fingerprinting, and health clearances as mandated for childcare personnel in New York State.
