Expected Commitment:
- Approximately 14 weekly team meetings
- 2 hours per meeting
- One official FIRST LEGO League competition (approximately 10 hours)
Compensation:
$55-$70 per meeting based on experience and qualifications, plus competition day pay(at matched rate).

STEM Space is a Maryland nonprofit focused on hands-on STEM and technology education through robotics, engineering, maker activities, coding, design, and project-based learning. Our programs help students develop creativity, confidence, teamwork, and real-world problem-solving skills through engaging, project-based experiences.
Position Overview:
STEM Space is seeking a FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Lead Coach to serve as the primary instructor, onsite lead, and organizational representative for an FLL team throughout the season.
The Lead Coach is responsible for the overall delivery of the program, including leading weekly meetings, mentoring students, coordinating assisting volunteers, communicating with STEM Space leadership, and ensuring a positive, safe, and productive learning environment.
This position requires an individual who is comfortable taking ownership of a program, leading a small team, and serving as the primary point of contact during scheduled team activities and competitions.
This position is ideal for college students, educators, engineering students, STEM professionals, and FIRST alumni interested in youth mentorship, leadership, and STEM education.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as the primary instructor and onsite lead for the FLL team
- Lead weekly FLL team meetings and activities
- Guide students through robot design, building, testing, and competition strategy
- Support students as they develop and present their Innovation Project
- Foster teamwork, sportsmanship, and a positive learning environment
- Coordinate and direct assisting volunteers during meetings and events
- Communicate regularly with STEM Space leadership regarding team progress, needs, and concerns
- Serve as a representative of STEM Space when interacting with students, parents, volunteers, community members, and event personnel
- Attend and coach the team at the official competition
- Assist with program setup, organization, materials management, and operational needs
- Ensure program activities are conducted safely and professionally
- Take responsibility for the successful delivery of the program throughout the season
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with FIRST LEGO League (FLL), FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), or similar STEM programs
- Experience working with youth
- Strong communication and leadership skills
- Ability to work independently and lead a small group
- Ability to supervise and coordinate volunteers
- Background in engineering, robotics, programming, education, or STEM fields is a plus

Requirements:
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Must be reliable, professional, and comfortable working with youth
- Must be able to attend weekly Saturday meetings and the season-ending competition
- Must be comfortable serving as the primary onsite leader for the program
