Job Summary
Join our dynamic waste management team as a Garbage Truck Route Assistant! In this energetic role, you will support the safe and efficient collection of municipal waste by assisting with truck operations, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and helping to maintain smooth daily routes. Duties
- Assist the driver with loading and unloading garbage containers, ensuring proper handling of various waste types including hazardous materials regulations when applicable
- Support the operation of automated side loader and rear loader trucks by helping with equipment setup and maintenance checks
- Perform pre-trip inspections in accordance with DOT (Department of Transportation) regulations and state transportation laws, focusing on air brake systems and manual transmission controls
- Help load and secure waste materials safely using front-end loaders or other heavy machinery, adhering to safety protocols for heavy lifting and hazardous materials handling
- Drive or ride along on designated routes, supporting safe driving practices including defensive driving techniques for commercial vehicles and tractor-trailers
- Communicate effectively with team members to coordinate route completion and report any issues or hazards encountered during collection activities
- Maintain cleanliness of trucks and work areas, following solid waste management standards to promote a safe environment
Experience
- Prior experience in commercial driving or delivery roles is preferred, especially with garbage trucks or similar heavy-duty vehicles
- Knowledge of mechanical systems related to front loader trucks, rear loader trucks, roll-off trucks, dump trucks, and flatbeds is highly desirable
- Demonstrated ability to perform heavy lifting safely
- Experience with municipal waste management or solid waste collection services is a plus but not required; training will be provided for qualified candidates
- Valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) with air brake endorsement preferred; however, training opportunities may be available for motivated applicants seeking to obtain licensing
