Summer Camp Counselor Job Description
Position Title: Summer Camp Counselor
Location: Lighthouse Church of God, New Britain, CT
Reports To: Camp Director and Assistant Camp Director
Employment Type: Seasonal / Part-Time or Full-Time
Position Summary
The Summer Camp Counselor is responsible for providing a safe, engaging, and Christ-centered environment for children attending Lighthouse Summer Camp. Counselors will supervise campers, lead activities, foster positive relationships, and serve as role models while helping children grow socially, emotionally, physically, and spiritually.
Essential Responsibilities
- Supervise and ensure the safety and well-being of campers at all times.
- Lead and participate in daily camp activities, games, crafts, sports, educational projects, field trips, and special events.
- Assist with camper check-in and check-out procedures.
- Build positive relationships with campers, parents, volunteers, and staff.
- Encourage teamwork, respect, inclusion, and good sportsmanship among campers.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe environment within assigned areas.
- Assist with serving breakfast, lunch, and snacks as needed.
- Enforce camp rules and behavior expectations in a fair and consistent manner.
- Respond appropriately to emergencies, incidents, and behavioral concerns.
- Communicate concerns, accidents, injuries, or disciplinary issues promptly to camp leadership.
- Serve as a positive Christian role model through words, actions, and attitude.
- Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Camp Director or Assistant Camp Director.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
- Experience working with children is preferred.
- Ability to supervise groups of children in both indoor and outdoor settings.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Positive attitude, dependability, and ability to work as part of a team.
- Ability to maintain professionalism when interacting with campers and families.
- Must support the mission, values, and statement of faith of Lighthouse Church of God.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification is preferred but not required.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to actively participate in games, sports, and outdoor activities.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to work both indoors and outdoors during varying weather conditions.
- Ability to supervise and engage children in an active camp environment throughout the day.
Background Check, Orientation & Child Protection Requirements
For the safety and protection of our children, all Summer Camp Counselors, staff members, volunteers, and interns who work directly with children must successfully pass a criminal background check before beginning employment or service. Employment is contingent upon satisfactory completion of the background screening process.
All Summer Camp Counselors are required to attend and successfully complete a mandatory one-day staff orientation prior to the start of camp. This orientation will cover:
- Camp policies and procedures
- Emergency preparedness and evacuation plans
- Child safety and abuse prevention protocols
- Behavior management and discipline procedures
- Camper supervision standards
- Incident reporting requirements
- Daily schedules and operational procedures
- Customer service and parent communication expectations
- The mission, vision, and values of Lighthouse Summer Camp
Failure to attend and complete orientation may result in disqualification from employment.
In addition, all staff members are required to complete Lighthouse Church of God's Child Protection Training and acknowledge all child safety policies and procedures prior to serving.
As required by Connecticut law, staff members who are designated as mandated reporters must complete all required training and immediately report any suspected child abuse, neglect, or endangerment in accordance with state law and camp policy.

All Summer Camp Counselors are expected to:
- Demonstrate integrity, professionalism, and Christian character.
- Treat every camper with dignity, respect, and compassion.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding campers and their families.
- Arrive on time and prepared each day.
- Work collaboratively with camp leadership and fellow staff members.
- Refrain from the use of tobacco, vaping products, alcohol, marijuana, illegal substances, or inappropriate language while serving at camp or representing Lighthouse Summer Camp.
- Maintain appropriate boundaries with campers and avoid any one-on-one situations that are not observable and interruptible by other staff members.
- Use social media responsibly and refrain from posting photos or information regarding campers without authorization.
- Follow all policies outlined in the Lighthouse Summer Camp Staff Handbook.
Work Schedule
Summer Camp Counselors are expected to work assigned shifts during camp operating hours and participate in special events, field trips, staff meetings, and training sessions as scheduled by camp leadership.
