Girls Ment To Be is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering girls ages 8-17 through mentorship, academic support, leadership development, and community engagement. Our mission is to provide young girls with guidance, support, and opportunities that help them build confidence, develop life skills, and thrive academically and personally.
Position Overview
Girls Ment To Be is seeking compassionate, dependable, and committed individuals to serve as Volunteer Mentors. Mentors play a vital role in supporting the growth and development of young girls by providing guidance, encouragement, and positive mentorship throughout the program year.
Mentors are expected to build meaningful relationships with their mentees and actively participate in mentoring activities and program events.
Key Responsibilities
- Meet regularly with assigned mentee(s) during the program year
- Provide guidance, encouragement, and positive mentorship
- Support mentees with goal setting, academic motivation, and personal development
- Participate in group mentoring sessions, workshops, and program activities
- Maintain communication with the Mentoring Program Lead and program team
- Complete mentor check-ins or progress updates when requested
- Serve as a positive role model and uphold the mission and values of Girls Ment To Be
- Follow all program guidelines and mentoring best practices
Program Commitment
- Mentors must commit to actively participating for the full program year (September – May)
- Mentors should be consistent, engaged, and reliable in their mentoring relationship
- Regular communication and participation in program activities is expected to ensure mentees receive consistent support
Program Schedule
- Program Year: September – May
- Mentoring Sessions: Typically scheduled between 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM at approved public locations such as community centers or libraries
- Group Activities: May include Saturday workshops and community events
Qualifications
- Must be 21 years or older
- Passion for supporting and mentoring youth
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Reliable, responsible, and able to commit to the full program year
- Ability to serve as a positive role model
- Must successfully pass a background check
Preferred Experience
- Experience working with youth, education, mentoring, or community programs
- Background in education, counseling, leadership development, or youth services
Training & Support
All mentors will receive:
- Mentor orientation and training
- Ongoing support from the Mentoring Program Lead and program staff
- Resources to help guide effective mentoring relationships
Work Location: Hybrid remote in Jackson, MS 39213
