Legal Assistant – Veterans Disability Law Firm
Our established, fast-paced law firm is seeking a dedicated legal assistant with a passion to serve disabled veterans navigating the complex VA disability benefits process. Our team works tirelessly to secure rightful benefits for our clients, providing compassionate and expert legal support throughout the claims process.
The veterans legal assistant will be responsible for varying duties, as assigned by the Certified Veterans Advocate and/or the firm attorney. Work hours offered will currently be part-time, approximately 30-35 hours a week. Depending on the needs of the firm and the skills of the legal assistant, these hours could increase.
Examples of duties may include:
- New client intake/screening;
- Appointment scheduling/planning;
- Calendaring deadlines;
- Mail processing; intermittent mailings;
- Filing & scanning;
- File preparation and closure;
- Payment billing/processing;
- Answering phone calls/emails and greeting/assisting clients;
- Evidence organization and internal routing;
- Evidence submission electronically;
- Gathering, organizing, and inputting case/medical information;
- Records requests of various types (i.e., school, medical, vocational, military);
- Maintaining/organizing legal files (both paper and electronic);
- Document drafting;
- General task/case management.
Qualifications:
- Previous experience as a legal assistant a plus, but not required (willing to train).
- Ability to prioritize and skillfully plan calendar for the Veterans Advocate.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in data entry and use of office technology, including copier, efax, scanner, VOIP phone lines, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Adobe.
- Deadline and detail-oriented.
- Professional, calm demeanor, and a passion to serve disabled individuals.
- Excellent skills in time management, organization, prioritizing tasks, and problem solving.
- Ability to maintain client confidentiality and follows HIPPAA Privacy Rules.
- Ability to follow written office procedures.
- Ability to work harmoniously with co-workers in a small office setting.
- Ability to self-motivate and work independently and reliably.
- Ability to work with low income/no income clients with physical and/or mental disabilities with respect, empathy, and dignity.
