Lead Electrical Engineer – Power Distribution & Control Systems
About the Opportunity
A growing manufacturer of engineered electrical power distribution equipment is seeking a Lead Electrical Engineer to provide technical leadership for the design and development of low- and medium-voltage switchgear, control systems, and custom power distribution solutions. This role works closely with engineering, manufacturing, and field service teams to deliver high-quality electrical designs for mission-critical industrial applications.
Candidates with strong experience using SolidWorks Electrical are highly preferred. Experience designing electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and complete electrical drawing packages in SolidWorks Electrical will be considered a significant advantage.
Position Summary
The Lead Electrical Engineer is responsible for leading the development of complete electrical design packages, including electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and Bills of Materials (BOMs) for custom power distribution and control equipment. This individual serves as the technical lead on engineering projects, mentors junior engineers and designers, and collaborates across departments to ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, and in compliance with customer requirements and applicable industry standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the electrical design of low- and medium-voltage switchgear, control panels, and power distribution equipment.
- Develop complete electrical design packages including:
- Electrical schematics
- Wiring diagrams
- Panel layouts
- One-line diagrams
- Terminal drawings
- Bills of Materials (BOMs)
- Utilize SolidWorks Electrical as the primary electrical design platform to create and maintain engineering documentation.
- Support and improve electrical design standards, templates, and documentation practices.
- Ensure compliance with IEEE, ANSI, NEMA, UL, and customer specifications.
- Review customer drawings and specifications to establish project design criteria.
- Collaborate with manufacturing, mechanical engineering, project management, and field service teams to resolve technical issues.
- Provide engineering support during fabrication, testing, commissioning, and customer acceptance testing.
- Troubleshoot wiring, controls, and electrical design issues as needed.
- Partner with estimating teams to develop equipment configurations and support accurate project quotations.
- Evaluate new electrical components, technologies, and suppliers.
- Mentor junior engineers and designers while promoting engineering best practices.
- Support new product development and continuous improvement initiatives.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
- 3+ years of electrical engineering experience designing low- and medium-voltage electrical equipment.
- Strong experience designing switchgear, switchboards, control panels, motor control systems, or power distribution equipment.
- Advanced proficiency with SolidWorks Electrical is strongly preferred.
- Experience creating:
- Electrical schematics
- Wiring diagrams
- Panel layouts
- BOMs
- Electrical documentation packages
- Ability to interpret customer specifications and electrical one-line diagrams.
- Working knowledge of electrical distribution systems, control systems, and equipment integration.
- Strong understanding of IEEE, ANSI, NEMA, UL, and applicable electrical standards.
- Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with low- and medium-voltage switchgear.
- Background in industrial power systems, power generation, marine, heavy industrial, or energy markets.
- Knowledge of:
- Generator control systems
- Protective relays
- Motor control centers (MCCs)
- Arc flash mitigation
- Power system coordination
- Experience with AutoCAD Electrical or other electrical CAD software.
- Familiarity with ERP and PLM systems.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus.
