We are seeking a compassionate and dependable Texas-licensed therapist to provide field-based therapy and complete behavioral health intake assessments for children and adolescents.
Position Summary
The Part-Time Field Therapist and Intake Specialist will provide individual therapy to children and adolescents residing in foster homes, group homes, and other approved settings. The therapist will also complete comprehensive intake assessments, Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) assessments, individualized treatment plans, and related clinical documentation.
This position requires excellent clinical judgment, strong documentation skills, flexibility, and the ability to work independently in field-based settings while collaborating with caregivers and members of the treatment team.
Primary ResponsibilitiesTherapy Services
- Provide individual therapy to children and adolescents in foster homes, group homes, and other approved service locations.
- Use trauma-informed and evidence-based interventions appropriate to each client’s diagnosis, age, developmental level, and treatment needs.
- Address concerns including trauma, depression, anxiety, anger, grief, emotional regulation, behavioral challenges, family disruption, and placement-related stress.
- Establish measurable treatment goals and monitor clients’ progress.
- Provide crisis assessment and intervention within the therapist’s scope of practice and company procedures.
- Collaborate with caregivers, foster parents, group-home staff, caseworkers, treatment providers, and other authorized members of the client’s care team.
- Maintain appropriate clinical boundaries and protect client confidentiality.
Intake and Assessment Services
- Conduct comprehensive behavioral health intake assessments with clients and their legally authorized representatives.
- Gather and evaluate information related to the client’s presenting concerns, behavioral health history, trauma history, medical needs, family functioning, placement history, strengths, risks, and current supports.
- Complete diagnostic assessments and establish clinically appropriate diagnoses within the therapist’s scope of practice.
- Administer and complete CANS assessments accurately and within required time frames.
- Develop individualized, person-centered, and measurable treatment plans based on assessment findings and identified needs.
- Complete initial and updated treatment plans, recovery plans, safety plans, and other required clinical documents.
- Obtain information from caregivers, caseworkers, group-home staff, QMHPs, and other authorized sources when necessary to complete a comprehensive assessment.
- Make clinically appropriate service recommendations and referrals.
- Ensure that documentation supports medical necessity and meets organizational, payer, Medicaid, and regulatory requirements.
- Coordinate with clinical, prior-authorization, and administrative staff regarding completed assessments and recommended services.
Documentation and Compliance
- Complete progress notes, assessments, CANS documentation, treatment plans, and other required records accurately and within established deadlines.
- Maintain an accurate appointment schedule in the electronic health record.
- Respond to requests for corrections or additional clinical information promptly.
- Participate in clinical consultation, staff meetings, audits, training, and quality-improvement activities.
- Follow HIPAA requirements, professional ethical standards, payer requirements, and all applicable state and federal regulations.
- Maintain professional liability insurance and all required licenses, certifications, and training.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in counseling, social work, or a related behavioral health field.
- Current, unrestricted Texas license as one of the following:
- Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
- Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)
- Applicants with associate-level licenses, including LMSW, LPC Associate, or similar provisional credentials, do not meet the licensing requirements for this position.
- Current Texas CANS certification or ability to obtain and maintain certification before completing CANS assessments.
- Experience completing behavioral health intake assessments, diagnostic assessments, and treatment plans.
- Experience providing therapy to children and adolescents.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed care, child development, risk assessment, crisis intervention, and mandated-reporting requirements.
- Strong clinical writing, organization, communication, and time-management skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
- Reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, and current automobile insurance.
- Ability and willingness to travel to foster homes, group homes, and other assigned locations.
- Ability to pass all required criminal-history, abuse/neglect registry, Medicaid exclusion, and other applicable background checks.
- Reliable access to a computer, smartphone, and secure internet connection.
- Evening and weekend availability.
Preferred Qualifications
- At least two years of experience providing behavioral health services to children and adolescents.
- Experience working with children in foster care, residential treatment centers, group homes, or child-placing agency settings.
- Experience completing CANS assessments and Medicaid behavioral health documentation.
- Experience diagnosing behavioral health conditions using current DSM criteria.
- Training in TF-CBT, CBT, EMDR, play therapy, motivational interviewing, or other evidence-based practices.
- Experience working with children who have complex trauma, placement disruption, emotional dysregulation, or behavioral challenges.
- Familiarity with electronic health record systems and community-based behavioral health services.
Schedule and Travel
This is a part-time, field-based position. The therapist must be available during times that accommodate children’s school and placement schedules. Evening and weekend availability is required.
Applicants must be willing to travel to assigned locations within Houston and surrounding areas. Travel assignments will be based on client needs, therapist availability, and geographic proximity whenever possible.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is compassionate, organized, clinically confident, and comfortable working with children who have experienced trauma or placement disruption. The therapist must be able to build rapport with children and caregivers while completing thorough, timely, and compliant clinical documentation.
