The Skeleton Key Odditorium is a museum and curiosity shop dedicated to exploring history through unusual artifacts, art, medical antiques, natural history specimens, folklore, and oddities. Located in downtown Portland, we provide visitors with a unique educational experience while supporting local artists, makers, and alternative culture.
Position Summary
The Museum Entry Host/Security Associate, serves as the first point of contact for visitors and helps create a safe, welcoming, and professional museum environment.
This position will primarily work at the museum entrance podium greeting arriving guests, answering questions, and enforcing checked open bag procedures. This position combines customer service, visitor engagement, and security awareness. The ideal candidate enjoys working with the public, remains calm under pressure, and takes pride in helping protect museum collections and visitors.
Current DPSST certification preferred.
Responsibilities
- Welcome visitors and provide admissions assistance.
- Monitor museum galleries and retail areas.
- Assist with bag check procedures and visitor flow.
- Help maintain a safe and welcoming environment.
- Deter theft through active presence and customer engagement.
- Work cooperatively with museum staff and management.
- Respond appropriately to visitor concerns and operational issues.
- Assist with opening and closing procedures.
- Document incidents when necessary.
- Serve as an ambassador for the museum and its mission.
Qualifications
- Current DPSST certification preferred.
- Prior experience in security, museums, galleries, hospitality, guest services, events, or customer-facing roles preferred.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to remain professional in challenging situations.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment while working independently.
- Reliable transportation and dependable attendance.
- Interest in history, museums, art, antiques, folklore, oddities, or cultural institutions is a plus.
- Requires standing for extended periods of time.
Work Environment
Employees may work independently and should be comfortable exercising good judgment without direct supervision.
The position requires standing, walking, interacting with visitors, and occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.
