Franklin Township is seeking a dependable, experienced Roadmaster to oversee the maintenance, repair, and safety of all township roads and related infrastructure.
Position Summary:
The Roadmaster is responsible for supervising the Township’s road department, including scheduling and directing road maintenance, repairs, winter maintenance (snow plowing, ice control), and construction projects. This role ensures safe and passable roads, timely response to emergencies, and proper upkeep of equipment and township infrastructure.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Plan, schedule, and supervise all road-department activities: road repair and maintenance, grading, pothole repair, ditch and culvert maintenance, roadside mowing/tree/brush upkeep, road signage and traffic-control maintenance.
- Oversee winter operations: snow plowing, de-icing, sanding, ice control, and emergency road clearing as needed.
- Maintain township equipment and vehicles; schedule regular maintenance and repairs; keep an inventory of equipment and supplies.
- Inspect roads, bridges, culverts, and related infrastructure regularly; identify hazards and ensure timely repairs or maintenance.
- Prepare reports for the Board of Supervisors (or governing township body) on road department activities, equipment status, maintenance plans, budgets, and grant opportunities.
- Supervise road-crew personnel, contractors, and any subcontractors; assign tasks, monitor work quality, ensure compliance with safety and township policies.
- Respond to emergencies — storms, flooding, hazardous road conditions, or other incidents.
Qualifications:
- Proven experience in road maintenance, public works, or related field; municipal or township experience a plus.
- Valid Pennsylvania Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) — typically Class B or equivalent — and experience operating heavy equipment (plow trucks, graders, backhoes, loaders, etc.).
- Strong supervisory and leadership skills; ability to manage crews, contractors, and interact with township officials.
- Solid knowledge of road maintenance practices, safety standards, and relevant state regulations for road/bridge maintenance.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including emergency call-outs, nights, weekends, and holidays (especially during winter or storm events).
- High school diploma or equivalent; further training or certification in heavy equipment operation, public works, construction, or related field preferred.
Work Schedule & Compensation:
Full-time position. Typical hours are 40 hours/week (e.g., Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–3:00 PM), but candidate must be available for emergency response, snow/ice events, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
