Position Summary
The Herbicide Technician works under the supervision of the Roads and Bridges Right of Way Maintenance Manager. This position is responsible for all aspects of Herbicide application at all sites maintained by the Roads & Bridges Right of Way Crews.
Work is generally performed outdoors, occasionally in inclement weather. The Incumbent is exposed to noise, din, dust and machinery. Performing the duties of this job requires standing, walking, sitting, stooping, and bending, and the ability to exert or lift 50 (fifty) pounds or more. The Incumbent must be able to operate landscape equipment and wear protective devices as needed.
Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Georgia driver's license is required.
Must obtain a valid Commercial Driver's License within 6 months is required upon accepting position.
Principal Accountabilities

Serves as a lead worker responsible for spraying herbicides and insecticides and performing landscape maintenance of county right of ways and facilities.

Assists the Roads and Bridges Manager and Operations Manager in the preparation and planning of the operating budget.

Identifies wees and diagnoses plant diseases and problems; selects and properly mixes, prepares and applies appropriate herbicide to eliminate weed and ornamental plant problems.

Operates general landscape equipment including but not limited to front end loader, tractor with basic landscape attachments, rototiller, aerator, mower, electric pruner, sprayer and edger.

Maintains complete and accurate records related to assigned work including work performed, herbicide and pesticide usage, equipment repair and maintenance, and maintains an inventory of necessary pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers.

Ensures the safety of county equipment and other county personnel by following proper safety procedures.

Performs routine checks and preventative maintenance on county equipment, identifies and reports equipment malfunctions; cleans equipment as needed.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of county policies and procedures and policies, procedures and activities of the Roads and Bridges Department.

Knowledge of Georgia Department of Agriculture Pesticide Application Standards and Procedures

Thorough knowledge of the techniques, tools, methods, practices, procedures and materials related to general landscaping and maintenance of county right of ways,

Knowledge of the techniques, tools, methods, practices, procedures related to pesticide and herbicide application using both high and low pressure systems.

Thorough knowledge of the proper procedures for operating, inspecting and maintaining assigned equipment.

Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions and safety regulations related to equipment operation and pesticide and herbicide application and other work related precautions.

Requires the possession of or ability to obtain within 12 months and maintain a Commercial Applicator's # 27/ Right of Way and #41/ Mosquito Control License issued under the Georgia Department of Agriculture.

Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a certified license as a Utility Flagger offered by the National Safety Council and Georgia Department of Transportation.
Desirable Training and Experience
Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work as described. Possession of a High School Diploma. Experience usually associated with one to three years of experience or service. A combination of education and/or work experience to provide the knowledge, abilities and skills desired for the position.
