The New Mexico Department of Transportation's Bridge Bureau is the definitive authority that is responsible for managing/performing activities related to State-owned bridges in New Mexico. This includes all activities from early planning and study phases, through design and construction, and finally, bridge inspection and management for the entire service life of a bridge.
As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to receive three (3) days of administrative leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.
Why does the job exist?
The Bridge Management Section of the Bridge Bureau is responsible for performing bridge analysis, maintaining an up-to-date bridge inventory, and developing bridge maintenance projects. The purpose of this position is to assist the Bridge Management staff with these activities. The primary job duties for this position include developing expertise in - and performing - Bridge Load Rating and developing the State¿s Bridge Inventory Database. Other tasks may include bridge preventive maintenance and rehabilitation projects, consultant oversight, supporting District Bridge Engineer requests, and developing emergency repair plans.
How does it get done?
The primary responsibilities of this position will include:
- Assisting Bridge Management staff in performing duties to meet State and Federal requirements.
- Gaining expertise with load rating and bridge management systems.
- Developing expertise with load rating and bridge inventory software programs.

Bridge management staff, District bridge personnel, consultants and the traveling public.

Minimum Qualification
Bachelor of Science Degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant engineering discipline and three (3) years of engineering experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling seven (7) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Must be licensed by the NMBLPEPS as a Licensed Professional Engineer in good standing within six (6) months of hire.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.
Employment requires successful completion of a pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results.
Business Reference check and Driver's License verification are required, and employment is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Field work is also required in varying weather conditions-hot or cold, humidity, wind, rain, and snow; exposure to sunlight, dust, concrete powder, and environmental allergens; exposure to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles; high volume traffic; insects and reptiles, loud noises, confined spaces, and stressful situations; interaction with public, local, county, school, and city officials by phone and in person; work is performed in the field, some assignments requiring travel and extended overnight stays away from post of duty along with extended hours and occasional travel. Sitting/Standing, bending, squatting, climbing, reaching, kneeling, and crawling for extended periods of time may be required. Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
