Staff Accountant
Location: Dripping Springs, TX
Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
About the Role
At Braun & Gresham, we combine the traditional values of integrity, honesty, and hard work with innovative legal strategies. Our goal is to protect what matters most to our clients, their land and their legacy.
Braun & Gresham is seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Staff Accountant to own the firm's day-to-day accounting functions, support accurate financial reporting, and help keep the month-end close process on track. This role is well suited to someone with a solid accounting foundation who wants to grow their technical expertise in a professional services environment, including exposure to trust accounting and law firm billing practices unique to legal operations.
You'll work closely with firm Controller and the Administrative Services Coordinator, serving as the technical backbone for accounting processes, financial recordkeeping, and internal controls — while also acting as a knowledgeable backup for front-office accounting and billing tasks when needed.
What You'll Do
Core Accounting
- Perform day-to-day accounting activities, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger maintenance.
- Review, code, and process vendor invoices, payments, and employee reimbursements with accuracy and timeliness.
- Lead and execute month-end close activities, including preparing and posting journal entries, account reconciliations, and account analyses to ensure accurate and timely financial results.
- Prepare and review reconciliations for key balance sheet accounts; investigate and resolve variances.
Trust Accounting & Client Billing
- Maintain and reconcile trust account (IOLTA) activity in compliance with State Bar recordkeeping requirements, serving as the firm's primary point of technical expertise on trust accounting.
- Review and process client retainer deposits, disbursements, and replenishments.
- Prepare and review client billing, including invoice generation, billing corrections, and write-offs.
- Serve as backup for credit card transaction entry and statement reconciliation, and for trust account compliance review support, when the Administrative Services Coordinator is unavailable.
Internal Controls & Compliance
- Maintain and test internal controls over financial reporting; document processes and support internal and external audits.
- Ensure firm accounting practices align with GAAP and applicable trust accounting regulations.
- Maintain organized, audit-ready financial records and supporting documentation.
Collaboration & Reporting
- Collaborate with attorneys and staff to resolve accounting issues and improve financial processes and controls.
- Prepare ad hoc financial analyses, reconciliations, and reports to support firm leadership.
- Communicate effectively with attorneys and legal assistants on billing questions, retainer status, and matter-related accounting needs.
- Mentor and support administrative staff on accounting-adjacent tasks, including billing support and expense processing.
Who You Are
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 2–5 years of progressive accounting experience; law firm or professional services experience preferred, particularly with trust/IOLTA accounting.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting practices.
- Experience with month-end close processes and account reconciliations.
- Familiarity with legal billing software and client trust accounting practices strongly preferred.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel; experience with accounting software (e.g., Caret, QuickBooks, Clio, or similar) a plus.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills, with sound judgment around confidential financial information.
- Ability to work independently within established accounting processes while managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Adaptable and collaborative, with a willingness to step in on front-office accounting and billing support as needed.
