JOB TITLE: Surgical Technologist The Nebraska Ambulatory Surgical Center
JOB SUMMARY
Under the general supervision of the Administrator/COO and the direct supervision of a Registered
Nurse, the Surgical Technologist is responsible for filling the surgical scrub role on all types of minor and major surgical procedures. Properly maintains a sterile field, works as a team, and communicates effectively with all members of the team as well as physicians. Assists physicians and nurses in various medical and technical procedures. Sterile processing will be a primary role in all aspects of the Facility. Sterile processing will be performed according to AAMI standards.
These functions must be in compliance with the philosophy of the facility, standards of practice and regulations of governing agencies; AAMI standards, AORN and within Infection Control/Quality

QUALIFICATIONS
High School graduate or equivalent required.
Certification as a Surgical Technologist is preferred, but not required.
Two years previous experience as an operating room surgical technician desired.
Sterile processing experience is strongly preferred.
Current BLS.
OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE
Exposure to blood borne pathogens, frequent exposure to chemical hazards and may encounter radiation hazards.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Decision making concerning equipment and/or instrumentation sterilization according to
AAMI standards.
2. Proper Bio-hazardous waste disposal.
3. Housekeeping duties, including room turn over in an efficient safe manner.
4. Patient care and patient flow to maintain efficiency and in a team-oriented manner.
5. Complies with facility practice standards regarding competent performance duties.
6. Creates a safe environment in which surgery may take place.
7. Uses medical equipment in a safe manner.
8. Helps provide cost effective patient care.
9. Implements principles of medical and surgical asepsis in accordance with recognized national standards and facility specific policies and procedures.
10. Provides physical safety for the patient at all times.
11. Accounts for sponges, needles, instruments, and other potential foreign bodies.
12. Supports other facility personnel in the performance of their duties.
13. Assists surgeon in scrubbed cases.
14. Pulls supplies for upcoming cases.
15. Demonstrates cooperative work attitude towards and with coworkers, employees,

management, patients, visitors and physicians.
16. Maintains a safe work environment in compliance with OSHA guidelines and infection control standards, AORN Standards and AAMI Standards.
17. Demonstrates knowledge of instrument processing from decontamination to storage of sterile packages.
18. Checks room for cleanliness, availability of supplies and equipment for all assigned cases at the beginning of each day.
19. Utilizes surgeon preference card to select packs, supplies and instruments, updates them frequently whenever needed. Reviews surgeon preference cards routinely for necessary updates.
20. Performs surgical hand scrub and dons’ sterile gown and gloves according to gowning and gloving policy. Doffs contaminated gowns, gloves and PPE to minimize blood borne exposure.
21. Maintains proper sterile technique when gowning and gloving surgeon and draping patient and while in the sterile environment. Promptly announces any break in sterile technique.
22. Handles specimen per established policy.
23. Transports instruments to decontamination area utilizing appropriate technique per AAMI standards and in compliance with established policies and procedures.
24. Puts unused sterile supplies and instruments away at the end of the day.
25. Restocks operating rooms, bays, storage rooms, clinical areas to established PAR levels.
26. Adheres to attendance, punctuality, meal and break time period policies.
27. Completes work in an acceptable time frame and in an independent manner. Once work is completed and after checking with management will clock out for the day so as to be respectful of the facility staffing plans and overall financial well-being. Will not “linger” unnecessarily. Will complete tasks for the day and prepare for the next surgical day prior to leaving in order to ensure all equipment, supplies, implants are present for each case.

30. Willingness to adjust schedule as workload fluctuates and as department needs require.
31. Attends and actively participates in department meetings. Documents review of materials presented and is responsible for information.
32. Functions as a team member with the best interest for the team and the facility in mind; does not engage in negative work environment or activities. Reports safety concerns to administration.
33. Communicates information about customers or other employees only as necessary to conduct facility related business, maintains HIPAA compliance, EMR compliance.
34. Works with local vendors, non-employee personnel in a respectable manner, while maintaining confidentiality on a need-to-know basis.
35. Will represent the facility in a positive manner both during working hours and outside of working hours.
36. Adheres to strictest confidentiality in dealing with patients, families, facility personnel, and the public.
37. Keeps supervisor apprised of work progress and reports follow through in a timely manner when assigned.
