Operates a variety of equipment and trucks utilized in construction, maintenance and repair activities; performs a variety of skilled tasks in the maintenance of streets, sidewalks, storm drainage systems and winter maintenance.
Works under the supervision of the Crew Leader(s), Heavy Equipment Operator, Foreman or assigned lead person in the field.

- Performs snow removal operations, including shoveling, sanding, and assisting with plowing operations for streets, sidewalks, and parking lots.
- Operates small equipment such as lawn mowers, trimmers, compactors, and hand tools.
- Operates chain saw and woodchipper equipment.
- Performs typical laboring duties including but not limited to shoveling, raking, sweeping, wheelbarrowing, chipping, and brush and tree removal as needed.
- Performs trash pick-up and litter removal from streets, sidewalks and all other public space as assigned.
- Operates light equipment and trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Operates light equipment, such as skid steers, dump trucks, snowplows, vactor truck, etc.
- Operates asphalt hot box, pavement roller and other power equipment and hand tools for the maintenance and repairs of streets, sidewalks and storm drainage systems.
- Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor.
- Performs routine cleaning of equipment.
- Keeps all equipment cleaned, organized, fueled, and ready for work at all times.
- Assists in the installing and maintenance of traffic control devices.
- Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
- Snow removal operations during winter months, including use of dump truck, sidewalk machines and other appropriate equipment used to move and manage snow across the community.
- Reports all damages, defects, or needed repairs of equipment to Foreman on approved work order forms.
- Reports all accidents and near misses immediately to management.
- Assists in Town-wide emergency response, including weather-related events.
- Performs related duties as required.
PERIPHERAL DUTIES
- Operates small equipment, hand and power tools to maintain streets, sidewalks, medians, ditches, and tree trimming.
- Performs inspection and maintenance of town-wide stormwater collection systems.
- May perform duties related to the construction and building of parks, ball fields, roads, sidewalks and other construction related projects for public spaces.
- Ensures conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
- Assists in the installing and maintenance of traffic control devices.
- Participates in safety meetings and training programs.
Education and Experience:
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
- Four (4) years’ experiences in public work or construction activities.
- Two (2) years’ experience operating light equipment.
- Valid State of Maine Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required; tanker endorsement preferred.
- Satisfactory completion of background check, physical examination, and drug testing.
- Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to roadway, utility, and construction public spaces.
- Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment.
- Ability to understand and follow oral or written instructions and communicate effectively verbally and in writing;
- Ability to observe proper safety precautions;
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors and the public;
- Ability to perform heavy manual tasks under varying weather conditions;
- Ability to drive and operate a variety of equipment under varying conditions.
Must maintain reliable telephone service for emergency call-backs.
Must be available to participate in an on-call rotation.
Motorized vehicles and equipment, including back-hoe, dump truck, pickup truck, street sweeper, vactor truck, plate compactor, saws, pumps, compressors, generators, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, detection devices, mobile radio, phone, and masonry equipment.
