Job Overview
Midwest Precision Molding is seeking a Tooling/Injection Molding Engineer to support new and existing plastic injection molding projects from initial quoting through tool launch and ongoing engineer support. This role will work closely with internal teams, customers, suppliers, and tooling partners to evaluate part designs, develop accurate mold FRQs, review and modify 3D models, support tooling decisions, and help ensure projects are completed accurately, efficiently, and on schedule.
The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with injection molds, mold design, plastic part design, and 3D CAD software, along with the ability to communicate clearly, make sound technical decisions, and manage project details in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Duties
- Create accurate, detailed injection mold RFQs based on customer part models, specifications, and project requirements.
- Review customer-supplied part models and drawings for moldability, manufacturability, tooling requirements, and potential design concerns.
- Create,revise, and modify 3D part models as needed to support quoting, tooling, customer communication, and internal review.
- Work with internal teams, customers, mold builders, suppliers, and tooling partners to clarify requirements and support successful tool builds.
- Assist in evaluating mold design concepts, tooling approaches, gating, parting lines, ejection, cooling, shrink, material considerations, and other key mold design factors.
- Develop and manage project timelines using company-selected project management or tracking software.
- Communicate project status, technical concerns, open items, risks, and recommendations clearly and accurately to the appropriate personnel.
- Support creative problem-solving related to tooling, molding, part design, manufacturability, and project execution.
- Maintain accurate records, data, quotes, files, project notes, model revisions, and engineering documentation.
- Serve as the internal owner for SolidWorks upgrades, updates, and related CAD system coordination.
- Collaborate with tooling, production, quality, customer service, purchasing, and management teams to support project goals.
- Make timely, informed decisions within the scope of the role and escalate issues when appropriate.
- Support continuous improvement efforts related to tooling, quoting accuracy, design review, documentation, and project handoff.
Required Qualifications
- Experience with plastic injection molding.
- Experience with injection mold design, mold construction, or tooling design review.
- Ability to create accurate and detailed mold RFQs.
- 3D CAD design experience, including the ability to create, review, and modify part models.
- Strong understanding of plastic part design and moldability considerations.
- Strong general computer skills and ability to learn company-selected software systems.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with internal teams, suppliers, customers, and outside mold builders.
- Ability to manage project details, timelines, and documentation.
- Ability to organize information, maintain accurate records, and follow through on open items.
- Ability to make decisions and communicate recommendations with confidence and professionalism.
Preferred Qualifications
- SolidWorks experience.
- Moldflow or mold simulation experience.
- Experience with bobbins, gears, threaded parts, or similar molded componenets.
- Plastics material experience, including understanding of resin behavior, shrink, flow, and application considerations.
- 3D printing or rapid prototyping experience.
- Experience working directly with mold builders or tooling suppliers.
- Experience supporting new product launches, engineering changes, or mold transfer projects.
- Experience in a custom injection molding or contract manufacturing enviornment.

Scope of Role
This position is primarily focused on tooling engineering, mold quoting, part/model review, project coordination, technical communication, and engineering documentation.
Education and Experience
A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Plastics Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Tooling Design, or a related technical field is preferred. Equivalent hands-on experience in injection molding, mold design, tooling, or plastics manufacturing will also be considered.
Work Environment
This role operates in both and office/engineering environment and a plastic injection molding manufacturing environment. The position requires regular interaction wit internal departments, suppliers, customers, and tooling partners.
Pay: $38.46 - $57.69 per hour
