Job Summary: The Med Support/Direct Support Professional supports individuals with developmental disabilities to have a quality of life. To promote health, safety, and well-being of individuals. A Direct Support Professional serves as an advocate for individuals in communicating their needs and goals.
Expectations: The Direct Support Professional shall exhibit the following:
- Communication: As a DSP you will be responsible for communicating with individuals, other staff members, and management. It is important to be able to communicate information clearly and concisely.
- Time Management: Time management is the ability to plan and execute tasks within a set timeframe. DSP’s must have strong time management skills will help you complete your tasks efficiently, meet deadlines, and ensure the safety of the individuals under your supervision.
- Problem-solving: Problem solving is the ability to identify and resolve issues. As a DSP, being able to identify and resolve issues will help you maintain a smooth workflow and support team members in an efficient and positive manner.
- Teamwork: A DSP works with a team of other DSP’s. A DSP must be able to demonstrate through action and relationships within the organization a commitment to teamwork and the agency mission.
Responsibilities: The Direct Support Professional shall:
- Schedule pick up and drop off, and provide assistance of individuals on scheduled med appointments as needed.
- Inform Day programs and enclaves of upcoming appointments, departures and returns.
- Send all appointment scheduled for the month to residential manager, residential supervisor, and nurse by the last week of the month.
- Document any missed appointments in logs. Communicate to nurse, manager, and your immediate supervisor.
- Relay information concerning invalid insurance coverage for person supported to your direct supervisor and to the program manager.
- Communicate pertinent information including new medications/treatments to manager, nurse, and team members upon return from medical appointments. Contact Pharmacy to assure that medication will be delivered in a timely manner.
- Have clinician indicate on consult the results of any general appointments and sign doctor’s orders when provided. If any other, information is received and unexpected on the appointment; leave nurse and direct supervisor a voicemail.
- Check with house/nurse before appointment to clarify if people have medication that may need to be given before or after the appointment. Confer with house nurse to assure that MIPS documentation is current for Medically Immobilizing Medications prescribed for specific appointment.
- Provide support to nursing staff-reviewing med cabinet, collating and filing documents that do not require a nurse’s note and inventorying medical supplies needed for specific sites.
- Implement all behavioral plans and/or contracts approved by Human Rights Committee.
Maintain valid credentials that are required or necessary to carry out the responsibilities upon and throughout employment.
Qualifications:
- One year experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities preferred. Valid driver’s license required.
