SUMMARY
This is a 40 hour a week position that includes travel in a company provided vehicle throughout southern California. The position will require the material identification of the piping at water services. Findings shall be inputted using a company laptop and/or tablet. A good driving record is required with the ability to be insured under the company insurance policy.
The position will require routine site surveys under close supervision. Routine tasks include, assisting certified backflow testers and/or cross-connection specialists in the performance of their duties. The trainee will be instructed in areas including but not limited to the site survey duties; locating and documenting physical structures (i.e., meters, pipe material, backflow devices, on-site water uses, etc.); verifying account information including meter numbers, backflow device make, model, type and model & serial numbers, etc.); and be able to review plans and blueprints against on-site survey info to ensure accuracy of various documents.
Many of the entry or training level activities are performed in a training type environment. The Backflow Program Tester Trainee is the entry level position in the Backflow Program job class family. The work experience gained in this position combined with required certification training will prepare the incumbent for the next level in this professional certification class.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1. Demonstrate an eagerness to learn the essential job duties that are necessary for successfully meeting all certification requirements within the first 6-months of employment.
2. Write clear, concise, timely, and accurate records of all survey information.
3. Study for and successfully pass the Backflow Certification Training Course within 6- month of hire.
4. Maintain accurate records and demonstrate an attention to detail in said records.
5. Follow directions.
6. Perform routine site surveys under close supervision.
7. Attend meetings as directed.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
The ideal candidate has an aptitude for mechanical duties (especially hydraulic and plumbing fixtures). A combination of education and experience can be used to satisfy the minimum requirements as long as they adequately prepare the incumbent to successfully complete the training and pass the certification exam. Ability to prepare spreadsheets (MS Excel); work under close supervision; work effectively with client and corporate management; resolve routine day to day problems; and achieve goals and objectives set forth by management.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
The ability to write reports and business correspondence; the ability to comprehend standard operating procedures; and the ability to communicate effectively with clients and co-workers.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to apply basic mathematical concepts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages and to draw and interpret graphs. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as calculating area, volumes, acreage, mass loading, conversion from metric to standard measurements, and similar mathematical operations.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems collects data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic formats and deal with abstract and concrete variables. The incumbent must be a self-starter capable of grasping procedures and issues; have exceptional organizational and time management skills; process and maintain confidential material; and demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills.
COMPUTER
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Database software; Project Management software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk. The ability to sit for long periods of time. Fine motor actions of hands, wrists and fingers are required along with the ability to withstand repetitive hand, wrist and finger movement. The ability to use hands to manipulate finger, handle or feel is required. The employee must be able to reach with
hands and arms; and to talk, see and hear. The employee may be required to stoop or crouch. The employee must be able lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Digging through dirt and other material to identify piping or to install plumbing.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in a variety of industrial facility environments while conducting inspections. These environments require strict adherence to safety rules and wearing of personal protective equipment (including safety glasses, hard hat, hearing protection, and steel toed shoes). The job requires driving to and from inspections. Approximately 5%-30% of the activities are in an office environment. The noise level in the work environment is moderate. Travel to and from designated project sites throughout the County and other local Southern California regions may be required. A valid California driver's license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be produced at time of hire.
