Job Title: Volunteer Coordinator
Job Type: Part-time, hourly, 30 hours per week
Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. (option to work reduced hours or take unpaid leave during the summer)

Job Summary
The Volunteer Coordinator manages the recruitment, onboarding, scheduling, and recognition of approximately 200 volunteers who support Backpack Brigade’s mission. This role serves as the primary point of contact for volunteers and helps ensure a positive, productive volunteer experience while meeting program needs.
Backpack Brigade partners with local communities to provide weekend hunger bags to school kids in need. We ensure every child is fed all weekend long. Started in 2014, Backpack Brigade addresses weekend food insecurity in our local schools. We are the largest agency focused solely on this work. Every week of the school year, Backpack Brigade serves over 5,200 students in five school districts (Seattle, Bellevue, Highline, Renton, and several independent) in King County comprising over 105 K-12 schools.
Key Responsibilities
Volunteer Recruitment
· Recruit volunteers through community outreach, social media, and volunteer platforms.
· Represent the organization at volunteer recruitment opportunities and community events.
· Maintain a pipeline of prospective volunteers.
Volunteer Onboarding
· Facilitate application and screening processes.
· Ensure required forms, waivers, and documentation are completed.
· Welcome new volunteers on their first shift, train, and supervise throughout.
Volunteer Engagement and Retention
· Foster a welcoming and inclusive volunteer environment.
· Plan and participate in volunteer engagement events (e.g., quarterly coffee meetups, a week-long volunteer appreciation event, pizza parties)
· Build strong relationships with volunteers to promote engagement and a sense of community.
· Educate volunteers on our mission, vision, and opportunities to get further involved.
· Recognize volunteer contributions and milestones.
· Gather and evaluate volunteer feedback to improve the volunteer experience.
· Stay informed on emerging trends, best practices, and industry standards in volunteer engagement.
Scheduling and Coordination
· Develop and maintain individual and group volunteer schedules.
· Communicate schedule changes and staffing needs with volunteers and staff in a timely manner.
· Match volunteers with appropriate opportunities based on skills, interests, and availability when possible.
· Coordinate volunteer coverage for programs, events, and special projects.
Training and Support
· Provide training, guidance, and ongoing support to volunteers.
· Develop and maintain training materials and volunteer resources.
· Address volunteer concerns and resolve issues professionally.
· Coordinates with team members to ensure we meet program and marketing needs.
Administrative Responsibilities
· Maintain volunteer records and database.
· Track volunteer hours and prepare monthly reports.
· Ensure compliance with organizational policies and procedures.
· Maintain and update Volunteer Coordinator Process Guide.
Events
· Recruit and coordinate volunteers for fundraising and community events.
· Assist with event logistics and volunteer assignments.
· Provide on-site volunteer supervision during key events.
· Attend outreach events, resource fairs, and other community engagement activities.
