JOB SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of the Manager, Coding, this position operates from within the Health Information Department to code, abstracts and analyzes medical information from outpatient facility encounters at Rady Children's Hospital - San Diego. Coding pertains to the knowledge and use of ICD, CPT, and HCPCS coding. Coding of diagnoses and procedures is performed on outpatient encounters and includes capturing diagnostic co-morbidities and complications, appropriate sequencing, procedure code modifiers, and assignment of CPT and HCPCS coding. Data specific to each visit is abstracted into the Epic Electronic Medical Record for the Revenue Cycle, Research, OSHPD, data comparison, studies, audits, and medical record reviews. In addition to coding and abstracting, this position also assists with the Hospital Revenue Cycle process by performing charge capture for patients seen in the Emergency Care Center and satellite Urgent Care Centers. This position is also responsible for monitoring, tracking and reporting error and denial trends to coding leadership. This position is responsible for reviewing, researching, and resolving problems and errors concerning data integrity of the electronic record, and acts as a liaison communicating correction issues with appropriate departments. Position may recommend outpatient coding changes based on audit findings and research. The Outpatient Coder serves as a resource to department staff when outpatient coding questions arise. Must understand and apply all regulations, laws, and standards applicable to coding to ensure appropriate and compliance billing.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
H.S. Diploma, GED, or Equivalent
1 year of experience
Certified Coding Associate (CCA) or Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Outpatient Coder (COC)
Experience with ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CTP-4 coding systems
Demonstrated knowledge of the Official Coding Conventions, Coding Rules, and Coding Guidelines established by the American Hospital Association (American Heart Association), and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for assignment of diagnosis and procedural codes
Knowledge of medical terminology, Anatomy and Physiology, Pharmacology, and Pathophysiology
Requires knowledge of the business use of computer hardware and software
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Associate’s Degree
2 years of experience
Certified Coding Specialist
Registered Health Info Admin
Registered Health Info Tech
Experience with Epic EMR System and 3M Computer Assisted Coding Software
Prefer pediatric coding experience
The current salary range for this position is $29.48 to $40.55
