The Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) provides rehabilitative services under the direction and supervision of a licensed Occupational Therapist. The OTA assists in implementing individualized treatment programs for incarcerated individuals with physical, cognitive, psychosocial, or functional impairments. This role promotes rehabilitation, functional independence, safety, and quality of life while adhering to security, safety, and healthcare standards.
Essential Functions:
- Implement therapeutic interventions and treatment activities as outlined in the plan of care developed by the supervising Occupational Therapist.
- Assist patients in developing, improving, and maintaining skills necessary for activities of daily living, self-care, vocational functioning, and leisure participation.
- Instruct and motivate patients in the safe performance of therapeutic exercises, adaptive techniques, and functional activities.
- Monitor, document, and report patient progress, tolerance, and response to treatment interventions.
- Report changes in patient condition to the supervising Occupational Therapist for treatment plan modifications as appropriate.
- Educate patients on adaptive equipment, safety techniques, and methods to enhance functional independence.
- Assist in preparing treatment areas and equipment, ensuring safety, cleanliness, and compliance with infection control protocols.
- Collaborate with correctional healthcare staff, medical providers, and security personnel to ensure coordinated patient care while maintaining institutional security procedures.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in accordance with facility, state, and federal standards.
- Participate in interdisciplinary treatment planning, quality improvement activities, and patient care conferences as assigned.
- Support staff education initiatives related to patient safety, adaptive equipment, and rehabilitation principles as needed.
- Adhere to all infection control, safety, confidentiality, and security procedures specific to the correctional healthcare environment.
- Regular and predictable attendance required.
It is expected that the incumbent shall perform other duties as assigned within his/her capabilities as determined by management.
Education and Experience Requirements:
Associate degree from an Occupational Therapy Assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) required. Current and active Occupational Therapy Assistant license in the State of Texas required. One (1) year of occupational therapy assistant experience in a hospital, rehabilitation, behavioral health, or correctional healthcare environment preferred. Basic Life Support certification required. Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record required, unless waived by management.
Post Hire Requirements:
Must successfully complete annual requirements to include maintaining licenses, certifications, and passing an annual background check.
