QUALIFICATIONS
A. Valid New Jersey School Nurse certificate and/or other such appropriate
certificate(s) as required by the State of New Jersey Board of Examiners.
B. Highly developed skills in:
- Assessment of students health and safety needs;
- Consultation with staff regarding those needs;
- Preparation of confidential student health written reports in a timely and accurate
manner;
- Communicating effectively with students and parents;
- Developing and implementing services designed to promote positive adjustment
and effective learning in school;
- Implementing the district’s health and health education programs;
- Providing effective health education instruction.
C. A commitment to continued professional growth and development.
D. Ability to maintain confidentiality in all matters.
E. Required criminal history background check, proof of U.S. citizenship or legal
resident alien status, proof of acceptable Mantoux test results.
F. Other qualifications that the Board of Education may find appropriate.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
A. Fulfills all responsibilities as defined in State Law, administrative code, and local
Board of Education policy and procedures pertaining to the functions relating to
the job title of school nurse.
B. Assesses the physical well-being of pupils in terms of developmental and present
health status.
C. Provides health education for pupils and staff in the classroom and building as
prescribed by Federal, State and local laws and/or procedures.
D. Coordinates the health referral process and communicates health findings to the
appropriate persons and/or agencies.
E. Provides health counseling for pupils, parents and staff.
F. Maintains a comprehensive health history and health appraisal record system.
G. Provides direct health care services to pupils and staff.
H. Maintains a communicable disease control program as prescribed by law and/or
State of New Jersey requirements.
I. Assists administrators, teachers and professional staff by interpreting significant
findings of health history, physical assessments, and reports of medical consults.
J. Initiates medically related home instruction procedures and implements follow-up
procedures.
K. Initiates, facilitates and maintains liaison between the school and community
health agencies.
L. Prepares reports as mandated by law, local policy or local procedures.
M. Develops activities and strategies, as appropriate, in collaboration with teachers to
maximize the opportunity for students to participate in the classroom with
success, thereby translating the Board’s commitment to equal educational
opportunity into classroom practice .
N. Provides instruction in the classroom on health and safety subjects.
O. Performs other tasks and assumes other responsibilities as may, from time to time,
be assigned by the building principal/other designated administrators.
SPECIAL NOTE: NJ 18A:40-3.5 states, “The holder of a valid New Jersey registered nurse
license may be issued a county substitute certificate to serve as a substitute for a school
nurse.”
