A growing manufacturing organization (200 employees) is seeking an experienced Senior Tax Accountant with strong State and Local Tax (SALT) experience to join its Finance team in Stillwater, MN. This position will play a key role in ensuring multi-state tax compliance, supporting tax reporting requirements, improving processes, and partnering with internal teams on tax-related matters. This is an in-office position, not available for relocation assistance. To maintain confidentiality, the company name will be disclosed during the interview process.
The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of sales and use tax compliance, experience researching state tax regulations, and the ability to independently analyze and resolve complex tax issues.
Position Responsibilities State and Local Tax Compliance
- Manage multi-state sales and use tax compliance activities, including preparation, review, and filing of sales and use tax returns.
- Research and analyze state and local tax laws, regulations, and rulings to determine business impact and compliance requirements.
- Monitor changes in state tax regulations, nexus requirements, and reporting obligations.
- Assist with nexus studies and state registration requirements.
- Maintain state registrations, annual reports, business licenses, and other required filings.
- Review and maintain customer exemption certificates and tax documentation.
- Support customer account setup requirements related to tax jurisdictions and exemption status.
- Utilize tax technology solutions such as Vertex, Avalara, or similar software to support accurate tax calculations and reporting.
Tax Reporting, Reconciliation & Audit Support
- Prepare monthly reconciliations of sales tax payable and related tax accounts.
- Research and resolve sales tax discrepancies, credits, and other tax-related issues.
- Support sales and use tax audits by preparing documentation, responding to information requests, and coordinating with tax authorities as needed.
- Assist with quarterly reviews and annual audit support.
- Prepare and maintain documentation supporting tax compliance and audit defense efforts.
- Assist with tangible personal property tax reporting and related compliance activities.
Accounting & Special Projects
- Support annual 1099 and 1042-S reporting requirements and vendor tax documentation.
- Research tax regulations and withholding requirements by state and country.
- Maintain fixed asset and capitalization records.
- Maintain equity roll-forward schedules and other financial reporting schedules.
- Support tax process improvements, automation initiatives, and accounting projects.
- Identify opportunities to improve controls, efficiency, and reporting accuracy.
Cross-Functional Partnership
- Perform general ledger account reconciliations and research discrepancies.
- Collaborate with Finance, Accounting, Operations, Accounts Payable, and Accounts Receivable teams on tax-related matters.
- Provide guidance and support regarding sales tax requirements and compliance obligations.
- Ensure accurate records are maintained and all filing deadlines are met.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience preferred.
- Strong State and Local Tax (SALT) experience required.
- Experience managing multi-state sales and use tax compliance.
- Strong general ledger accounting and reconciliation experience.
- Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines independently.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Vertex, Avalara, or similar tax software.
- SAP experience preferred.
- Manufacturing industry experience preferred.
- Experience with multi-state tax nexus analysis.
- Advanced Excel and data analysis skills.
