CDL Utilities has an immediate need for a skilled and reliable Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) Operator/Locator in NY. We are looking for a hard-working individual capable of working extended hours and occasionally on weekends for emergencies or special situations. The work is predominantly outdoors, and the candidate must be prepared to work in different weather conditions.
Responsibilities:
- The Directional Drill Operator will be responsible for the installation of underground conduit and fiber optic cable.
- Operate Directional Drill, confirm and walk bore path.
- Perform job site analysis.
- Understand blueprints and locate underground utilities.
- Responsible for mud mixing and bore gel prep.
- Maintain a safe work environment by following codes, standards, and legal regulations.
- Set equipment up including the drill, water tanks and grounding the machine Perform pot holing, locating and remediation.
- Operates vehicles and other construction equipment as needed.
- May perform manual work functions associated with underground construction, (which may include assisting with laying/installing pipe, boring under roads/driveways, pouring concrete, digging holes or trenches, driving ground rods, shoveling materials, lifting/moving heavy materials, flagging traffic, etc.).
- Operates an electronic locating device to properly navigate drill head.
- Operate a directional drill to install conduit/cable to support electrical and telecommunications networks; may install potable water lines and high/low pressure gas lines.
- Calculates percentages of elevation to navigate drill head over, under or around objects.
- Set equipment up including the drill, water tanks and grounding the machine.
- Communicate with the locator to confirm the location of the drill head and drilling in accordance with blueprints without damaging existing utilities while maintaining proper industry standards.
- Conduct post-job quality checks.
- Communicates with Supervisor daily to turn in required paperwork (i.e. Daily logs, job reports, etc.)
- Responsible for reading paint or locate flags of utility placement and possess the ability to "read the job layout" including service lines, valves and meter housings that may or may not have been located.
- Ensuring equipment and tools are cleaned and stored properly.
- Maintaining safe working habits/conditions according to all regulations, procedures, and policies.
- Comprehension of ground conditions for drilling, boring, and/or locating.
- Ensuring Company assets (vehicles, equipment, tools, etc.) are properly and continuously maintained in good repair and secured in a safe manner.
- Read and accurately interpret design prints and organization of materials and other resources as necessary to complete excavation requirements, which may include basic hand tools.
- Maintain daily bore logs and identify the use of tools required for maintaining and servicing the drill, drill stem, and rack as well as the ability to diagnose and/or relay any problems to a certified repair technician.
- Provide training and assistance to co-workers learning to be HDD Operators/Locators.
- Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition (e.g. inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, cleaning work areas, etc.); monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
- Assist with all aspects of the job including basic labor responsibilities.
- Performs safe work practices.
Qualifications:
- Must have at least 2 years of experience operating and locating HDD equipment in rural and urban areas.
- Must be familiar with underground construction.
- Must have an OSHA 10 or OSHA 30.
- Must have a driver’s license Class B or higher.
- Must be authorized to work in the United States
- Must be able to pass drug, criminal, and background checks.
- Ability to communicate effectively with crew leaders, customers, employees, etc.
- Ability to work independently or as an active member of a team.
- Ability to travel and be away from home for extended periods of time.
- Willing to safely work in all temperatures, climates, and weather conditions.
- Must be able to lift or move manhole covers or similar items.
- Have knowledge of utility depths and placement.
- Ability to read prints and interpret utility maps to identify the type and size of underground utilities.
- Aptitude to lead, take initiative, and have good communication skills.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Class A CDL w/ Tanker Endorsement required for Horizontal Directional Drill Operators & Horizontal Directional Drill Locators
- Prior experience in the utility construction industry or related construction fields.
- Ability to speak and read both English and Spanish.Physical Requirements:
- Position is very active and will require the employee to stand, crouch, sit, bend, etc.
- Ability to work while wearing safety boots, safety glasses, and hardhat.
- Must lift/carry 50 lbs. with or without assistance.
- Capacity to work in adverse weather and driving conditions.
- General labor positions may operate a variety of hand and power tools, clean and prepare job sites, dig trenches, set braces to support the sides of excavations, clean up rubble and debris, remove waste materials, carry materials and supplies from trucks to the job site so they are ready for installation, or other tasks as assigned.
- Able to work as needed (overtime, after hours, on weekends for emergencies, or on-call) and in all weather conditions.
- Have reliable transportation to and from.
