The Drug Testing & Electronic Monitoring Technician plays a vital role in supporting court-ordered supervision programs by performing professional drug testing services and installing/removing electronic monitoring equipment. This position is responsible for accurate client intake, specimen collection, chain-of-custody documentation, financial transactions, and maintaining a safe, respectful, and confidential environment.
On the electronic monitoring side, this role is limited to installation and removal of electronic monitoring equipment only. All monitoring, alert response, and reporting functions are handled by the Monitoring Center team.
Key Responsibilities Drug Testing & Client Services
- Greet clients professionally and maintain a respectful, judgment-free environment
- Verify client identity using government-issued photo ID or approved documentation
- Enroll new clients and ensure accurate data entry
- Check in clients for randomized testing and provide appropriate paperwork
- Clearly explain testing procedures, expectations, and confidentiality policies
Specimen Collection & Chain of Custody
- Collect urine specimens following strict procedural guidelines
- Monitor for potential tampering and document any irregularities
- Complete and maintain chain-of-custody documentation
- Label, seal, and securely store specimens
Packaging & Shipping
- Prepare specimens for shipment
- Use appropriate packaging to prevent contamination or damage
- Complete daily shipping procedures (FedEx Monday–Friday)
Financial Duties
- Collect testing fees and issue receipts
- Maintain accurate transaction records
- Balance collected funds at the end of each shift and report discrepancies
- Follow all company protocols for cash handling
Electronic Monitoring Equipment
- Install electronic monitoring devices in accordance with agency protocols
- Remove electronic monitoring devices upon program completion or court order
- Verify proper equipment fit and function at time of installation
- Educate clients on equipment care, usage, and expectations
- Document all installations and removals accurately
Communication & Reporting
- Promptly report issues, irregularities, or concerns to leadership
- Collaborate with management to resolve client disputes, procedural errors, or safety concerns
- Maintain professionalism, clarity, and confidentiality in all interactions
Cleaning & Facility Maintenance
- Perform routine cleaning and disinfecting of restrooms, collection areas, and waiting rooms
- Sanitize high-touch surfaces and testing equipment regularly
- Ensure workspaces are clean, organized, and well-stocked
- Dispose of biohazard materials and trash according to safety protocols
- Refill hygiene supplies as needed
Qualifications
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow procedures
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times
- Basic computer literacy and data entry proficiency
- Comfortable handling financial transactions and balancing funds
- Ability to type a minimum of 50 WPM
- Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently and as part of a team
Work Environment
- Direct observation during specimen collection for same-sex monitoring
- Interaction with individuals from diverse backgrounds, including court-ordered and employment-related clients
- Adherence to safety, privacy, and ethical standards at all times
- Shift work, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, may be required
