Advisory Board Development Consultant

This is a field-facing consultant role leading Advisory Board Development work across nonprofit clients. You'll work directly with executive leaders and board members to improve how advisory boards operate and deliver real results.
What You'll Do
- Lead board consulting engagements and provide strategic guidance and subject matter expertise recommendations to organizations to help organizations in achieving governance and performance goals
- Facilitate meetings, retreats, and workshops, that move groups from alignment to action (virtual and in-person)
- Improve advisory board effectiveness (meetings, attendance, engagement)
- Advise and build upon internal development consultation management practice at the Zumaya Group
- Apply practical tools and frameworks in real environments (not theory)
Required Skills
- Experience consulting non-profit organizations
- Experience working with nonprofit boards / governance structures
- Workshop, retreat, and consulting engagement design + facilitation - 8-12 retreats per year on average
- Ability to build action plans, roadmaps, and simple frameworks
- Exposure to governance / board development standards-based frameworks
- Tools: Microsoft 360
- Familiarity with board operations (meetings, committees, recruitment, engagement)
- Accountability mindset - follows through and drives work to completion
- Obsessive attention to detail and process management organization critical to the role
- Strong facilitator - leads the room, manages dynamics, drives outcomes
- Clear communicator - simplifies complex ideas into practical action
- Executive presence - comfortable with senior leaders and board members
- Relationship builder - builds trust quickly across diverse groups
- Bias for action - less talk, more execution
- Technical Functional Skills
- Virtual facilitation tools (Teams, Zoom)
- Experience using AI tools (e.g., Microsoft Copilot) to create content, synthesize insights, and improve productivity
Preferred Qualities
- Non-profit board advisory consulting experience
- Passion for continuous improvement and development, ideally have built workflow automation utilizing LLMs (Copilot, Claude, ChatGPT, etc.)
Role Details
- Location: Remote, with potential travel to client sites and events (travel will be reimbursed by the clients)
- Schedule: Flexible, aligned to workshops and engagements (primarily daytime, occasional evenings) - must be willing to work EST and CST
Pay: $5,000.00 per month
