Role Description:
Position Summary
The Clinical Laboratory Scientist / Medical Technologist provides onsite clinical laboratory testing services in support of the VA Maine Healthcare System. The position performs a full range of laboratory procedures used in the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of eligible VA beneficiaries. Personnel will support day-to-day laboratory operations, specimen processing, quality control, instrument operation, test performance, result verification, and documentation in accordance with VA policies, laboratory protocols, accreditation standards, and applicable federal requirements.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform clinical laboratory testing in one or more laboratory disciplines, including chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, microbiology, serology/immunology, blood bank/transfusion support, or other assigned areas.
- Receive, accession, process, and prepare patient specimens for analysis.
- Operate, calibrate, troubleshoot, and perform routine maintenance on laboratory instruments and analyzers.
- Perform quality control, quality assurance, and proficiency testing activities in accordance with established procedures.
- Review test results for accuracy, consistency, and clinical reasonableness before release or escalation.
- Identify abnormal, critical, or questionable results and follow required notification, repeat-testing, documentation, and escalation procedures.
- Prepare reagents, stains, controls, standards, and other testing materials as required.
- Maintain laboratory records, worksheets, instrument logs, QC documentation, and other required records.
- Follow standard operating procedures, safety policies, infection-control practices, and specimen-handling requirements.
- Support laboratory workflow by prioritizing stat, routine, and scheduled testing.
- Assist with validating new or revised test methods, procedures, equipment, or workflows as assigned.
- Coordinate with VA laboratory staff, clinicians, nurses, and other healthcare personnel to resolve specimen, testing, or result-related issues.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and compliant laboratory work area.
- Protect patient privacy and handle all health information in accordance with HIPAA, VA policy, and applicable privacy/security requirements.
- Report equipment failures, supply shortages, safety concerns, and testing delays to the appropriate VA point of contact.
- Perform other related clinical laboratory duties within the scope of training, certification, and contract requirements.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or a related biological, chemical, or physical science field; or equivalent education and training acceptable to the Government.
- Current certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Technologist, or equivalent credential from a recognized certifying body such as ASCP , AMT , or equivalent, if required by the solicitation or VA facility.
- Demonstrated experience performing clinical laboratory testing in a hospital, medical center, reference laboratory, or comparable clinical laboratory environment.
- Ability to perform testing accurately and independently under established procedures.
- Knowledge of laboratory quality control, quality assurance, safety, and documentation requirements.
- Ability to work onsite at VA Maine HCS / Togus and meet applicable VA onboarding, credentialing, badging, and background requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience supporting a VA, DoD, federal healthcare facility, hospital laboratory, or high-volume clinical laboratory.
- Experience with automated chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, microbiology, or blood bank analyzers.
- Familiarity with laboratory information systems and electronic medical record workflows.
- Experience working under CAP, CLIA, Joint Commission, or comparable accreditation standards.
- Ability to support multiple shifts, weekends, holidays, or surge coverage if required by the TOPR.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong understanding of clinical laboratory principles, specimen integrity, analytical testing, and result interpretation.
- Ability to recognize testing errors, instrument issues, specimen problems, and critical values.
- Strong attention to detail and documentation discipline.
- Ability to follow written procedures and maintain compliance with laboratory protocols.
- Effective communication skills for coordination with laboratory staff and clinical personnel.
- Ability to manage competing testing priorities in a patient-care environment.
- Professional judgment to escalate issues that may affect patient care, test accuracy, or laboratory operations.
Physical / Work Environment Requirements
- Work is performed onsite in a clinical laboratory setting.
- May require standing for extended periods, handling biological specimens, using laboratory equipment, and wearing required personal protective equipment.
- Must comply with all VA safety, infection-control, biohazard, chemical hygiene, and occupational health requirements.
- May require shift work, weekend, holiday, or after-hours coverage depending on the final TOPR schedule.
