SteadFast Transportation Inc. holds a USPS Contract Delivery Service (CDS) agreement and is seeking an independent contractor to service an established mail route. This is a contracted business relationship, not employment — the contractor determines their own method and sequence for completing the route, provided all deliveries are completed within the timeframes required by the USPS contract. This route starts at the Doland, SD USPS office.
Scope of the contract:
- Sort mail and packages into delivery sequence.
- Load vehicle for the route.
- Complete deliveries along the established route within the required daily window.
- Dismount vehicle as needed for parcel, Express Mail, and accountable-item delivery. Deliveries are made up to ½ mile from the mailbox; parcels that don't fit are left at the door or another agreed location.
- Collect outgoing mail and packages.
Contract requirements:
- Route requires service six (6) days per week, Monday–Saturday, with government holidays observed. The contractor sets their own daily schedule and route sequence to meet delivery windows.
- Contractor is responsible for ensuring the route is completed in all weather conditions; contractor decides how to prepare for and manage conditions (vehicle choice, timing, etc.).
- Must be able to handle parcels up to 70 lbs.
- Eligibility for this USPS contract requires passing a Postal Service background and driving record check (no felonies, DUIs, etc.) — this is a USPS contract-holding requirement, not a company hiring screen.
Vehicle requirements (contractor-provided):
- One (1) dependable vehicle with at least 120 cubic feet of usable load space.
- All-wheel or 4-wheel drive preferred.
- Contractor is responsible for all vehicle maintenance, fuel, and insurance costs.
Independent contractor terms:
- This is a 1099 independent contractor relationship — no employment, agency, or partnership is created.
- Contractor is paid per the route contract, not on an hourly basis.
- Contractor may, subject to USPS eligibility requirements, use a qualified substitute or assistant to service the route.
- Contractor is free to accept other business or contracts; this is a non-exclusive arrangement.
- Contractor supplies their own equipment, vehicle, and insurance and is not reimbursed for these as business expenses.
