JOB SUMMARY
The Clinical Operations Supervisor plays a critical role in overseeing the delivery of nursing care across the hospital, ensuring the highest standards of patient care, safety, and satisfaction. This leadership position requires the ability to assess patient needs, plan and implement care strategies, and evaluate outcomes while managing hospital-wide priorities. Collaborating with Nursing Care Teams, the Clinical Operations Supervisor ensures compliance with established standards and fosters continuous improvement in care quality. This role is responsible for ensuring high-quality, safe, and efficient patient care while addressing operational needs, staffing adjustments, and conflict resolution. The Clinical Operations Supervisor acts as the on-site administrative representative in the absence of department managers and other leadership, ensuring adherence to hospital policies and fostering a collaborative and professional environment. This position requires the ability to step into direct patient care or charge nurse responsibilities as needed to address staffing shortages or other critical needs. In addition to administrative responsibilities, the Clinical Operations Supervisor provides direct patient care when needed, including conducting assessments, assisting with treatments and procedures, educating patients and families, and maintaining accurate medical records. This role also requires proactive communication with physicians and healthcare teams to coordinate efficient, high-quality care and achieve desired treatment outcomes.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership and Supervision
- Act as the central point of contact for hospital operations during assigned shifts, ensuring seamless coordination of care and resource allocation.
- Direct, delegate, and oversee nursing staff to ensure efficient workflow and adherence to quality standards.
- Conduct regular rounds to evaluate the delivery of nursing care, identifying issues, and implementing solutions promptly.
- Mentor and orient new staff members to hospital protocols, fostering professional growth and team collaboration.
- Ensure consistent communication with management, providing updates on patient conditions, operational challenges, and staff concerns.
- Facilitate staff meetings to discuss updates, address concerns, and enhance team cohesion.
- Ensure proper staff assignments based on patient acuity and staff skill levels.
- Evaluate and adjust staffing levels to meet patient care demands, including arranging for on-call or per diem staff.
- Provide leadership and guidance to nursing staff, ensuring compliance with hospital policies and regulatory standards.
- Address and resolve staff conflicts or performance concerns professionally and expediently.
- Ensures that their own, and their colleagues’, appearance and personal conduct are always professional.
- Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner in the community.
- Always maintain patient confidentiality. Maintains regulatory requirements, including all state, federal and JCAHO regulations.
Clinical Operations
- Monitor patient care units to ensure compliance with care plans and hospital policies, addressing any deviations or gaps.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to review, modify, and implement individualized patient care plans.
- Respond promptly and effectively to critical or emergency situations, ensuring patient safety and optimal outcomes.
- Ensure all equipment and devices are functioning correctly, reporting malfunctions and coordinating repairs as needed.
- Assist with patient admissions, discharges, and transfers, ensuring smooth processes and efficient throughput.
- Conduct quality checks, including code cart inspections, Accu-Chek validations, Temp logs, and safety monitor reviews.
Quality Improvement and Compliance
- Evaluate and enhance nursing care standards, policies, and practices through participation in quality improvement initiatives.
- Utilize evidence-based research to improve patient care delivery and staff performance.
- Address and resolve patient and family concerns promptly, escalating issues as necessary.
- Maintain detailed records of educational program attendance and performance improvement activities.
- Review incident and occurrence reports, ensuring timely and effective resolution of issues.
Patient and Staff Advocacy
- Act as a patient advocate, ensuring all care is patient-centered, culturally competent, and aligned with the hospital’s mission and vision.
- Serve as a resource for clinical staff, providing guidance and expertise on complex cases or procedures.
- Facilitate clear communication between nursing staff and attending physicians, ensuring all parties are informed about patient conditions and care plans.
- Resolve conflicts among staff or between staff and patients/families professionally and expediently.
Unit-Specific Responsibilities
- Demonstrate clinical competence in all aspects of patient care, including administering medications, managing emergencies, and using advanced technology.
- Monitor patient care metrics and outcomes, providing data-driven recommendations for improvements.
- Support efficient staffing by monitoring patient acuity and assigning resources accordingly.
- Notify physicians of any significant changes in patient conditions and document all updates thoroughly.
- May require working as a Charge Nurse or providing direct patient care as a regular staff nurse on the floor in case of nursing shortages.
- Demonstrate flexibility in assuming various roles to ensure adequate staffing and continuity of care.
- Maintain clinical proficiency to support bedside nursing, including patient assessments, medication administration, and procedural care.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Organize and lead educational programs, ensuring staff receive ongoing training and development in clinical care, case management, and quality improvement.
- Evaluate staff performance, providing constructive feedback and opportunities for professional growth.
- Ensure compliance with safety protocols, infection control standards, and hospital accreditation requirements.
- Actively participate in hospital committees or task forces as required, contributing to organizational goals and initiatives.
- Oversee the receipt and handling of blood products delivered from blood banks, ensuring proper storage and compliance with hospital protocols.
- Maintain and audit blood product logs, ensuring accuracy and timely documentation.
- Coordinate with laboratory and clinical staff to facilitate safe and efficient administration of blood products to patients.
- Ensure adherence to all regulatory standards for blood product management, including storage, usage, and reporting.
Injury Reporting and Protocol Compliance
- Ensure timely reporting of all staff, visitors, and patient injuries, following hospital policies and regulatory guidelines.
- Complete and submit incident reports accurately, documenting all relevant details, including the nature of the injury, contributing factors, and immediate actions taken.
- Coordinate with appropriate departments, such as Risk Management and Human Resource director, to investigate incidents and implement corrective actions.
- Facilitate communication with injured parties and their families (if applicable) to provide updates and ensure proper care and follow-up.
- Monitor and ensure compliance with safety protocols to prevent future injuries and enhance overall safety in the facility.
REQUIREMENTS
- Current RN license in the state of Texas.
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in nursing preferred.
- Minimum of 3–5 years of progressive nursing leadership experience, preferably in an acute care setting.
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure, prioritizing tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency in electronic medical record systems and familiarity with hospital operations technology.
CERTIFICATION, LICENSURE
- · Current Texas Registered Nurse License.
