Louisville Veterinary Referral Center (LVRC) is located in downtown Louisville, adjacent to the Highlands, in our newly expanded facility on East Broadway. We offer primary care, urgent care, and specialty internal medicine services, including ultrasound, CT, and endoscopy. We're seeking a Veterinary Technician or Assistant to join our Urgent Care team, helping us provide same-day, walk-in, and after-hours care for pets facing everything from minor wounds to more urgent medical concerns.
This role requires flexibility — our Urgent Care department operates extended hours, including evenings and some weekends, to meet the needs of pets and families when they need us most.
We're looking for motivated individuals who are self-starters, eager to learn, and ready to push their current skill set in a fast-paced environment. A minimum of two years of experience in small animal private practice is required. We do not require certification at this time but would welcome the experience.
Responsibilities
- Assist veterinarians in performing examinations and urgent care procedures, including venipuncture, IV catheter placement, nursing care, digital x-ray, filling prescriptions, and administering vaccines and medications.
- Safely handle and restrain animals during treatments and examinations, including patients presenting in pain, distress, or with limited mobility.
- Triage incoming urgent care and walk-in patients, helping prioritize care based on severity of presenting conditions (e.g., vomiting/diarrhea, lameness, wounds and lacerations, urinary issues, seizures, respiratory concerns).
- Monitor anesthesia and patient vital signs, and assist in administering treatments as directed.
- Run IDEXX blood analyzers and support diagnostic workups, including bloodwork, urinalysis, and imaging support.
- Maintain accurate, timely electronic medical records and communicate clearly with pet owners and the LVRC team regarding condition updates and home care instructions.
- Provide support for dental procedures and in-house laboratory testing as needed.
- Maintain cleanliness, organization, and proper stocking of exam rooms, treatment areas, and equipment.
- Deliver calm, clear, and compassionate communication with clients who are often anxious or stressed due to the urgent nature of their pet's visit.
Requirements
- Minimum of 2 years' experience in small animal private practice.
- Core skills: correct restraint techniques, venipuncture, IDEXX analyzer operation, EMR navigation, radiograph positioning/technique, and anesthesia monitoring.
- Excellent communication skills with both clients and team members, especially under time pressure.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evening shifts and some weekend coverage, as part of our Urgent Care rotation.
- Certification (CVT/RVT/LVT) not required but welcomed.
- Comfort working in a high-volume, fast-paced walk-in environment alongside a supportive, experienced clinical team.
